Gay Icon Project
In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 19:58, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Turning down STIII
What kind of evidence there is for the claim that Alley turned down the second Saavik appearance because of typecasting fears? Personally, I wouldn't be very surprised if that was the reason, but the reason I have heard being cited (mostly by Leonard Nimoy, the director) is that she just wanted more money than the producers were prepared to give her.
AJK 20:55, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)
I thought I saw this on the ST III Directors Edition DVD as well, so you're not the only one to hear this. 75.163.130.47 (talk) 21:44, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
According to her own Biography, her own comments, and the Biography Channel, it had nothing to do with money, rather, it was because of depression over guilt she felt when her mother was killed by the drunk driver while she was doing Star Trek 2.
If you notice, she did very little work of any kind until late of 84.
Also, to those fanbois who try to claim she turned down her reprisal when approached for a TNG episode and ST: 6 - Kirstie Alley was locked into an exclusive agreement with NBC because she was doing a little known show called Cheers, and anyone who's familiar with how NBC handled its contracts at the time know full well that NBC blocks movie contracts with competing studio conglomerates. Pierce Brosnan and James Bond is a perfect example of this.
She didn't "turn down" an attempt to play Saavik on TNG and in ST: 6, she was prevented from accepting. 71.218.239.24 (talk) 05:06, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Not sourced
In 2006, Alley expressed some disenchantment with Scientology, noting that it was of no help in her attempts to lose weight, and that ultimately she turned to Jenny Craig. [1]
The above is not sourced - the link does not support the statement at all.--Justanother 03:23, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- I visited the link. I think it is misleading to refer to the situation as "the link does not support the statement at all"; that implies that there is a news story at that URL, but the news story in question fails to support the statement referenced to it. There is in fact no story at that URL; I think it is fairly obvious that the news article which was at that URL has expired. Accordingly, I am restoring the reference, per WP:CITE#What to do when a reference link "goes dead". -- Antaeus Feldspar 03:42, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
The text of the link can still be found here: [2][3]. However, the Alley quote does not support the text. Personally, I don't trust indian media for anything except Bollywood movies, and I do also not trust "BANG media" (formerly "WENN", which runs hollywood.com, contactmusic.com and femalefirst.com etc) very much.

Alley questions Scientology
New York: Former "Cheers" star and Scientology devotee Kirstie Alley has questioned the religion saying that it may not be as inspirational as is claimed because it did not help her to diet.
According to hollywood.com, Alley once weighed 220 pounds and was forced to seek advice from weight loss expert Jenny Craig to help her shed weight, despite Scientology's claim to hold the answer to dieting.
She had used the religion's teachings to kick a cocaine habit but she couldn't use the same techniques to help her food addiction.
According to Alley: "It was different in that I developed a nutty attitude where I'd think, 'If some guy really loves me, he does not care if I am fat.' Or, 'To be a good mother, you have got to cook and eat the food you give your kids.' I'd come up with all these stupid justifications and reasons why it would be okay to be fat."
--Tilman 04:04, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- Hmm, really? Why is it that you don't trust them? They are definitely one of the 'lighter' news sources out there, so I would not use them as a source for analysis or comprehensive overview, but for what's claimed here, I would. Why do you feel differently? -- Antaeus Feldspar 04:56, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- Also, http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3474519 is the link I think I would favor for sourcing, were we to use this. -- Antaeus Feldspar 05:00, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- One reason that that years ago, WENN had a crazy story that Tom Cruise had paid off scientology so that they let him go. From all the stories I read, I think that WENN / BANG is at the lowest quality... most stories are that some "friend of a star" said something, or a story that was already written elsewhere. Yes, the stories are fun. But usually, it is something that may or may not have happened.
- Btw, in her book (which I bought for 1 EUR on ebay) and is fun to read, Kirstie Alley mentions an auditing session where she realized that she was fat because of a miscarriage. It is mentioned here [4] (WENN!) but without the auditing session. --Tilman 19:14, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Justanother objects to the observation that Alley remained silent while Narconon was being tossed out of the San Francisco and Los Angeles public schools, on the grounds that it is "unsourced". Alley's public statements are widely reported. But how do you source someone NOT speaking out? Also, the rejection of Narconon is relevant to the article because as their spokesperson, and someone actively involved in educational issues (she opened a Scientology learning center in Wichita), it's surprising that she would stand by and let this happen without uttering a word. -- Touretzky 08:06, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- A number of issues here. Re not speaking out. Unless you can source that specific comment it is "original research"; it is your point or idea. It needs to go on those grounds alone. That is really enough and we do not need to go further. But we can. This is a bio of a living person and you don't put that kind of unsourced derog stuff in there. Out it comes until you can source it. You DON"T leave that sort of stuff in while waiting for sourcing.--Justanother 13:43, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- Kirstie Alley isn't really a PR person, she's more a sort of celebrity face who shills for Narconon. There are certainly a lot of issues where Kirstie Alley did NOT speak out. She did also not speak out about Greg Beha being scammed, and many other issues. If we keep that part, we should also mention the anti-psych scientologists who didn't speak out about the Lisa McPherson abuse (which sounds like what scientology is accusing psychiatry of doing). --Tilman 15:51, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
- It is interesting to discuss what Kirstie's role is though that is not germane as to whether we put unsourced WP:OR in the article. It is OR to say in the article that she was silent unless you can source it. But in the general discussion realm; she is, as you say, a face - though one with her own success using Scn drug rehab techniques (as am I). IMO, it is her job to tout Narconon, not to respond to every criticism and in actual fact, using one's own communication lines to further the enemies' position by addressing it is a violation of basic Scientology PR technology so she should remain silent.--Justanother 16:05, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Who got her birthname incorrect? Can someone confirm and correct?
In the paragraph on Kirstie Alley's early years, someone has stated that she was born "Gladys Leeman". First this makes no logical sense because her father's name is Robert Alley and there is no mention of her being adopted, or from another marriage or anything of the sort. However, if you look up on IMDb, you'll find that Gladys Leeman was her *character* name in Drop Dead Gorgeous.
Denise Richards ... Rebecca 'Becky' Ann Leeman Kirstie Alley ... Gladys Leeman <-- Sam McMurray ... Lester Leeman
It's her CHARACTER's name, not her birthname, folks... I'm not familiar with editing, so could someone make the correction for me and remove the link to the bogus reference [1]. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.17.246.118 (talk) 22:00, 15 March 2007 (UTC).

Lt. Saavik
Alley received a supporting role in the 1982 movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, playing Romulan-Vulcan officer Lieutenant Saavik.
That Saavik was half-Romulan is not canon. The novelization of The Wrath of Khan, evidently based on an early script, does state her Romulan ancestry. But because it was never stated in the film, it's not considered canon.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.172.249.123 (talk • contribs)

- Yes, she's been around a long time and frankly, weight can sometimes remove the wrinkles. She graduated high school in 1969, that's sourced. In general, high school graduation is at age 17 or 18. Tweets re WP:BLPPRIMARY and WP:SYN
Alley tweeted something. Independent reliable sources discussed the tweet. Subject to WP:RS and WP:WEIGHT, Wikipedia discusses what the sources say about the tweet. Wikipedia does not determine that the tweet is relevant, meaningful or what it means.
Alley tweets something else that you feel contradicts the earlier tweet or otherwise applies to the topic.
The tweet is a primary source in an article about a living person. Wikipedia can use that source ONLY for basic, non-controversial information about the subject. Typical information sourced this way would be basic biographical info: birth date, simple info on parents, etc.
Including the tweet in any way because you feel it somehow adds/changes/contradicts other info in the article is synthesis. We do not have an independent reliable source stating the tweet is in any way meaningful, though including it is certainly meant to imply it is.
TL;DR: Wikipedia does not pick things a subject said because we feel they say something meaningful about that subject. - SummerPhDv2.0 00:15, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- Now we have an independent reliable source for it.
- Applying the same reasoning, something she said on The Howard Stern Show, cited to a youtube of the show, is another random quote. Did she say it? Sure. Is it "politics"? Debatable. Is it significant? No. It's one thing she said over the course of several decades. We could pack the article full of everything she's ever said: her opinions on Ted Danson's hair, churros and the "correct" way to hang a roll of toilet paper. - SummerPhDv2.0 16:29, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Place of death
A number of editors have inserted Tampa, Florida, as Alley's place of death. The sources cited by these editors do not state her location at the time of her death, but refer to the family's tweet thanking Moffitt Cancer Center for caring for Alley. We cannot make the inference that Alley was at Moffitt Cancer Center, which is located in Tampa, at the time of her death, as she could have been discharged from their care to a home or hospice in any location, including somewhere other than Florida, after her care at MCC. Unless a reliable source specifically states Alley's place of death, do not add this information to the article. General Ization Talk 03:32, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Scientology progress
As loathe as I personally am to bring up Scientology in any form, it seems that, according to Tony Ortega's blog, Kirstie Alley is now an OT 8 Scientologist as of last year. I'd edit the article, but I'm unsure if Ortega's blog counts as a valid source for Wikipedia's purposes. I mean, it's an inconsequential bit of trivia, honestly; outside of anti-$cientology hawks and her fans, who cares about her progress in a loony cult-- but it bothers me to see outdated biographical information. -Xterra1 18:27, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Kirstie Alley's Big Life (2010), finished in second place
How did she finish in second place on her own reality show. Whomever edited this needs to correct. 68.117.25.226 (talk) 15:07, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- As I understand it, the show was structured as a competition between Alley and her handyman, Jim, both of whom were overweight, to lose the greatest amount of weight using the weight-loss system that Alley had devised. Jim lost more weight over the course of the show's tapings than did Alley, hence the claim that Alley "finished in second place". Could probably use a reword, or omit the outcome here altogether since it is not particularly relevant to Alley's career. General Ization Talk 03:02, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

This sentence : "Alley opted not to, though was never asked to, reprise her role as Rebecca Howe on any episode of Frazier, because the series was centered on the field of medical psychiatrists; she was the only former Cheers regular not to do so". I believe the mentioned church is fundamentally against this, not sure exactly how and what, and from context alone it can pretty much be understood, though seems to me it could be elaborated on a bit more.
