Redirect

[edit]

Users searching 'laser eye surgery' are clearly searching for eye surgery specifically involving the use of lasers. In this case 'LASIK' is the appropriate page to link to; redirecting 'Laser eye surgery' to merely 'Eye surgery' is a waste of time. Hunter-Ing (talk) 11:35, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LASIK is not the only form of "laser eye surgery". See Eye surgery or Refractive surgery. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 13:23, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Admittedly you have a point. I maintain that 'Eye surgery' is not the appropriate place to redirect to, but agree that 'Refractive surgery' is probably better than 'LASIK'. To that end, I suggest this page redirect to 'Refractive surgery' instead of 'Eye surgery' as it presently does. Is anyone opposed to this suggestion? Hunter-Ing (talk) 00:42, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am. Read Eye_surgery#Laser_eye_surgery. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:03, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored this redirect to point at LASIK. The common name for LASIK is "laser eye surgery", and all inbound links to this article are intended to point at that subject. To insist on pointing at an utterly banal section of eye surgery is absurd and not at all helpful to our readers. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) - talk 13:03, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but that makes no sense at all. LASIK is just one of many different forms of laser eye surgery. It is completely inappropriate for this redirect to point there. A red link to an empty article would be preferable. A link to the relevant section of eye surgery is slightly better. A link to Refractive surgery could also work.--Srleffler (talk) 07:02, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, what is really needed here is a disambiguation page.--Srleffler (talk) 07:09, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a non-specialist passerby, I find this page rather unhelpful. Do you really expect the average person to know whether they want the page on 'phototherapeutic keratectomy' or 'LASIK'? Xerxes (talk) 20:58, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
An article on laser eye surgery in general would be useful, but we don't seem to have one right now. Failing that, a person who is interested in laser eye surgery but doesn't know which type should probably look at several of the linked articles to see which is most relevant to their interest.--Srleffler (talk) 22:47, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is needlessly confusing - most people are unaware that there are multiple kinds of "laser eye surgery" and have no idea that what they're really looking for is LASIK or something else (I have no idea what I'm looking for, I wasn't aware that laser eye surgery meant more than one thing myself and am not sure what I'm looking for now). I concur as a non specialist this is very unhelpful. 176.252.1.138 (talk) 10:04, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I added a brief explanation of each technique. Does that help?--Srleffler (talk) 19:40, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
