Historiography of Liliuokalani: Finding better sources

[edit]

I am really interested in learning about the historiography (how historians have written) about Queen Liliuokalani and her life and the research that has been put into this figure through the year. It would be nice to find an expert opinion on the most reliable sources out there to use for this figure. Also if there was a modern comprehensive and more up to date biography of the queen on the level of Allen's 1982 biography which is probably the most well researched piece and personal biography of the Queen aside from her own autobiography (although Allen has been accused in recent time of sensationalizing parts of her book). I find that modern books on her fall into the trouble of focusing solely on her life during the overthrow and completely overlooking the rest of her eventful life or they are just a regurgitation of old secondary sources with no new contributing research. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:09, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

KAVEBEAR do you have Questia access? If not, you might want to sign up. The following books are available in their entirety through Questia access.
  • Iaukea, Sydney Lehua (2012). The Queen and I: A Story of Dispossessions and Reconnections in Hawai'i. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press – via Questia (subscription required) . ISBN 978-0-520-27066-4.
  • Proto, Neil Thomas (2009). The Rights of My People: Liliuokalani's Enduring Battle with the United States, 1893–1917. New York, NY: Algora Publishing – via Questia (subscription required) . ISBN 978-0-87586-720-5.

A Questia search also brings up several hundred books and references that mention Liliuokalani. — Maile (talk) 16:17, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've already included them both below as further readings since I couldn't access them in google books. Interesting I will apply for an account since I really want to read The Queen and I anyway. Also are you aware a resource where you can search "cited by" frequencies in articles other than Google Scholars?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:35, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not right off hand, I don't know of any. However, Wikipedia has a lot available. I'll put their template below this message, and you can browse the resources at your convenience. — Maile (talk) 18:19, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think we are close to amassing all existing book sources speaking directly about Liliuokalani which is sad. All other books now I am coming across are history book written for children. It seems most literature lump her and the overthrow or the Kingdom together. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:17, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

HHS Sources

[edit]

Docking a few HHS articles below to review for later. Many don't really fit into further reading section since the topic for most part isn't directly about the queen and most have only brief mentioning of the queen. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 19:22, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thrum's Hawaiian Annual

[edit]

These may be really helpful down the line especially for contemporary commentary during the period. They need to be mine for relevant chapters and articles. It would interesting to know if Thrum was pro-annexation, a royalist or neutral. At the moment the format below is for use of the entire almanac as a source not the individual portion within the edited work which should be attributed to the correct author(s) (some are written by Thrum but others are not). Placing hat over all of them (complete list) for now since none at the moment have been thoroughly mined for relevant articles/section.

We have this as a Google book in the References section (different ISBN and OCLC). But it's available in its entirety under MUSE. Didn't know if we should substitute this version or not. — Maile (talk) 22:16, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this may be the last image she appeared in during her last public function. Her appearance seems to be younger in the 1915 or 1916. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 18:49, 15 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This image dates to September 17, 1915, Balboa Day or Pan-Pacific Day. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=hvd.hxh18z;view=1up;seq=643 Which according to this claims Liliuokalani had a part in starting. I am wondering what happen to the regular celebration of the holiday. --KAVEBEAR (talk) 21:20, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You are very good at research. An interesting aside in the link you provided. 3 pages above are images of a proposed "Pan-Pacific Peace Palace". I think that's what got redesigned and eventually built as the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial. — Maile (talk) 01:33, 18 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
