- As for the second question:
- Well, this page certainly isn't alone - see, for example, category:Lists of musicians by instrument. Wikipedia:Categories, lists, etc points out limitations to categories and nice features of lists.
- Personally, I'd go with keeping categories, dropping lists, and hoping that somewhere down the line the shortcomings of categories are dealt with. In the case of Cape Breton fiddlers, a list isn't that big a problem —there won't be a lot of mis-listed names (compare it to the List of fiddlers; see also the 'drop the List of fiddlers, replace with categories' discussion here).
- As for the first question:
- In fact, each person's page is already marked with the appropriate category: Category:Cape Breton fiddlers overlaps entirely with this List.— eitch 20:04, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
