help by editing exhibition catalog numbers

[edit]

@Magnus Manske: @Multichill: can the exhibition catalogue numbers be created by listeria, if I do it manually I am reverted. Could one get also references? Thx--Oursana (talk) 02:44, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Oursana: there is no such thing as exhibition catalogue number. Every exhibition tends to have a catalog. You can add catalog code (P528) with the code in this catalog, qualified with catalog (P972). See for example d:User:Jane023/Catalog of the paintings on show at the Rijksmuseum in 1956. Jane is the expert when it comes to catalogs. Multichill (talk) 10:20, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I tend to keep those lists on Wikipedia, not Wikidata, just because I can see whether there are any changes to paintings and/or Wikidata labels on my watchlist. But that list is a good case in point, showing that the list order of the list in main namespace is really very different from the list according to Listeria: Catalog of the paintings on show at the Rijksmuseum in 1956 versus User:Jane023/Catalog of the paintings on show at the Rijksmuseum in 1956. There are only 21 items, so pretty easy to just fill in the numbers by hand. The numbers seem to be currently stuffed in the exhibition property under a qualifier (at least I assume so, not having a catalog to check it with). This is not a good way to go (the code number should link to an actual catalog, and I have in the past equated the exhibition with its printed catalog, but theoretically these are 2 different items. You certainly can't depend on the code for the list order by the way. There is no way to preserve the list order with Listeria that I know of, since the next time a catalog number is added to the item the list order will be messed up. In fact this is one of the enhancements that I have requested, namely to enable a custom list order. As far as my catalog expertise goes, I use the property for "catalog" as a qualifier for "catalog code", but I don't feel that this works particularly well and am willing to use "exhibition" with a "catalog code" qualifer if anyone prefers. As an aside here, in case anyone cares, the catalog code property was initially meant for stars and other celestial objects -- I hijacked it a while ago for art catalogs. My manually filled in catalogue number was reverted [1]. And I have the catalogue. And indeed the data concerning the catalogue and exhibition participation have to be controlled.--Oursana (talk) 23:32, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
