Counting wierdness[edit]

In http://www.archive.org/stream/kappasigmabookma00dunlrich#page/100/mode/2up/search/grand+conclave, on page 101, it lists the Conclaves as

  • Baltimore 1876
  • Richmond 1878
  • Abington 1880
  • Knoxville 1883
  • Lynchburg 1885
  • Nashville 1887
  • Atlanta 1888
  • Baltimore 1890
  • Washington DC 1892

(and then more)

which makes Washington DC the ninth convention, but on page 8 of

http://books.google.com/books?printsec=frontcover&id=3v4SAAAAIAAJ it *clearly states that the Washington DC convention (complete with full date) was the Tenth Biennial convention.

Was there an 1881 or 1882 convention that wasn't in the first reference? Any other ideas how this should be handled?Naraht (talk) 18:21, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK, from http://books.google.com/books?printsec=frontcover&id=3v4SAAAAIAAJ#v=onepage&q&f=false , the 1885 Conclave was the 6th, so the missing one has to be before 1885.
And http://ef.kappasigma.org/content/jacksons-men clearly says that the Richmond conclave in 1878 was the second.Naraht (talk) 18:33, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If I follow, there is some conclave that isn't listed above that falls between the 2nd (1878) and 6th (1885).
  • 2:1878 - Richmond
  • 3:1880 - Abingdon
  • 4:
  • 5:
  • 6:1885 - Lynchburg
And somewhere in this spot there is 1883 - Knoxville -- I'm currently looking for sources for clarification, but its difficult.
EDIT 1: Bononia Docet P33 suggests the third was in Abingdon.
EDIT 2: [1] confirms that 83 conclave is in Knoxville.
EDIT 3: ahh! This has the same listing as above clipping
EDIT 4: It might be the 4th conclave that no one knows about: "No copy of the call for the Fourth Grand Conclave is known to exist..."
EDIT 5: Nope, I was wrong -- the 5th was "omitted from numbering" see clipping

Possible dates[edit]

  • 1917:
    • Scheduled for Atlanta, but waived?
      • In 1917 Atlanta had secured the Conclave, but waived the choice at the choice at the outbreak of the war, considering it a patriotic duty.
      • Atlanta will have a strong appeal in that she gave up the 1917 Conclave on account of war's imperative demands.

Full Dates[edit]

I think it would be a reasonable addition to the List, if the actual dates where included. So that in addition to knowing that a convention occurred in 1966, that it occurred July 5th - July 7th, 1966. By using the dts template, correct sortability can be maintained. For example, for the entry above, it could be coded as {{dts|1966|7|5}} – {{dts|1966|7|7}} would come up as July 5, 1966 – July 7, 1966 but would be sorted as 1966 and as such would come before one in 1968 that occured in August. dts also allows for year old and year and month just by dropping off arguments. There are quite a few of the references that actually include the dates.Naraht (talk) 13:11, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion in searching[edit]

"Biennial grand conclave" as a term seems unique to Kappa Sigma, so adding Kappa Sigma in the search, might unnecessarily limit hits.Naraht (talk) 13:20, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

List of Worthy Grand Masters?[edit]

I went looking for a list of Worthy Grand Masters for Kappa Sigma, thinking that a list might include the years they were elected, perhaps allowing for figuring out what years grand conclaves occured in the WWI and WWII timeframe. I can't find *any* list, much less one with dates on it. Is this a reasonable thing to look for?Naraht (talk) 14:09, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have a feeling it'll be even worse than this list :-) -- I'm putting in some time now trying to flush out some more of this list, but I'll take a look at that after this.jheiv talk contribs 19:41, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Missing Conclave Notes[edit]

1912[edit]

  • Louisville, Ky., July 10 -- An army of 2,000 Greek letter men recruited from colleges and universities throughout the country took possession of Louisville today, the occasion being the twentieth biennial grand conclave of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. The sessions of the gatering will last three days and will be liberally interspersed with features of entertainment.

1920[edit]

  • Robert Douglas, who represented the State College chapter of Kappa Sigma at the Kappa Sigma conclave at Seattle last week, was signally honored by being elected to the office of grand procurator for the district comprising the Northwestern states. He was the only undergraduate elected to office by the conclave. - here or on Image 2 of 16 here. This could be a so-called "district" conclave and not the national conclave. jheiv talk contribs

1922[edit]

  • Richard M. White, a junior in the School of Law of the University, will be the delegate from the local chapter of Kappa Sigma at the midwest conclave of the fraternity, which will meet in Kansas City March 17 nd (sic) 18. This will be the seccond annual conclave of Kappa Sigma since the war. Eighteen states will be represented at the gatering. - here or on Image 3 of 6 here. This seems like a regional conclave rather than the national conclave, but 18 states seems like a significant number. Also of note is the mention that it's the second conclave since the war -- but who knows where that information came from. jheiv talk contribs 19:47, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
