Rfc: "Countries"
[edit]Should "countries" that are not sovereign states be listed? This involves Hong Kong, and possibly Greenland, the Faroe Islands, Bermuda, Gibraltar, etc., too for other lists by countries. Baksando 03:30, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Baksando, "Country" is not a synonym of "sovereign state", they are different terms. On this page, yes, as for the speed limits by country page, its basically the same. Their ships often fly under their own flag and are registered in that country. Hong Kong, for example maintains a separate shipping system despite the fact that it is not sovereign (see Ship registration in Hong Kong). We generally don't organize globally comprehensive lists around national or sovereign status, because it excludes some jurisdictions that don't have those statuses and therefore cannot be globally comprehensive.Synchronism (talk) 08:16, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Should they be listed beneath their sovereign powers in the same manner as states, provinces, etc.? Or should they not be listed at all? Baksando 15:03, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- List them without ranking, with — sign instead of rank, like it is done in many other lists of countries. Greyhood (talk) 15:37, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

- Please ignore Baksando, the best hope is that ignoring him will make him go away because he is permanently banned. SchmuckyTheCat (talk)
Where are Hong Kong and Taiwan? Why aren't they listed? 203.198.25.183 (talk) 13:07, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
Data Sources
[edit]I would suggest to use the UNCTAD - Merchant fleet by flag of registration and by type of ship, annual, 1980-2016 data source. It is more up-to-date and provides a timeline going back to 1980. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.70.176.237 (talk) 20:07, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
