Page length?
Once all this information gets flushed out, it will be a very, very long page.
Keeping all state highways on their own pages would help prevent this, and it seems reasonable. --Rob 07:17, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- That seems like an anrgument putting the cart before the horse so to speak. When there is so much information that one page cannot handle it all, it can be split off as needed. Until then, it makes more since to keep all the information centrally located. Indrian 15:16, August 26, 2005 (UTC)

The list of Indiana state highways was manageable when it consisted almost entirely of short articles on short highways typically in the northeastern part of the state. Some people have added more, especially involving highways in other parts of the state, and it would be appropriate now to treat this page as a general statement followed by links to the various highways as is done for Michigan.
It would be appropriate to bave a tabular listing of highways by number with links to articles on specific highways. So instead of going through the numbing list of articles identified as "Indiana State Highway X", one might find the number '37' and get a link to "Indiana State Highway 37". Nobody is likely to confuse a '37' in this list with, for example, "Illinois 37" or "Michigan 37" because nobody looking for those highways would be loking at the Indiana State Highways page. --66.231.41.57 06:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Name change
I propose that this page be moved to "Indiana State Highways" or "List of Indiana State Highways." The reason for this? "Indiana State Highway" is a proper noun. Also, if we have this taken care of, SFD and CFD won't have any reason to grant us the lowercase stub or turn us down for the category. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 03:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

- A funny thing happens when you start referring to state routes as a system, though. They become State Highways (in Illinois at least). It's odd that they refer to it as Illinois State Route x individually, but then call it then Illinois State Highway System.
- The moral of the story is that I don't think it matters whether this page or the Illinois state highways list is "List of Illinois state highways" or "List of Illinois state routes". —Rob (talk) 20:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

- State Roads is the correct name for indiana. For now, I'm moving them to Indiana State Road X, until they will even tually get moved to the truly correct name of state road X (Indiana). Official Name
It's too hard to add comments in there, so i'll put them in here. It seems INDOT is a little confused itself:
- In fact, all the "notice to highway contractors" use state road.

- analyzing the URLs and type of doucment, it seems that when a "state road" is being planned, the planning committee calls them "state routes". But then after it's built, INDOT refers to them as "state roads"....? 06:05, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- No idea. Literally every single instance I've seen driving around in Indiana has it as SR X. I've always assumed that meant State Route. But I'll support State Road for now. —Rob (talk) 20:42, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
From being a resident of Indiana for 20+ years and still visiting there from time to time, I have only heard the state highways in Indiana referred to as Indiana X, State Road X, Highway X, and Indiana State Road X, I have never heard the term route used. That may vary for other parts of the state though. --Holderca1 15:00, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

SVG images needed
I would prefer the partial set of GIFs already existing be replaced with a complete set of SVG files, i.e. Image:Indiana 2.svg or Image:IN 2.svg. Does InDOT keep specs of its route signs anywhere? —Rob (talk) 19:50, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

Pre-1926 "Main Market Highways"
Info from [6] and [7] - first five roads were designated June 1, 1917:
The enactment of a law creating a state highway commission, providing for the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair and control of public highways, and providing for co-operation with the Federal Government in the construction of rural post roads was passed by the General Assembly at the Seventieth Regular Session, 1917; approved by the Governor March 7, 1917, and became effective by the Governor's proclamation June 1, 1917....
One of the first duties prescribed by the statute is the "The Commission shall determine what roads shall be designated as MAIN MARKET HIGHWAYS".....
Main Market Highways
- No. 1. The road beginning at the Indiana and Michigan state line in St. Joseph County, Indiana, extending thence southernly through South Bend, Lakeville, Lapaz, Plymouth, Argos, Rochester, Greenoak, Mexico, Perue, Kokomo, Westfield, Carmel, Indianapolis, Scottsburg, Henryville, Sellersburg, New Albany, and Jeffersonville.
- No. 2. The road beginning at the Indiana and Illinois state line, extending thence easterly through Dyer, Schererville, Merrelville, Deepriver, Valparaiso, Westville, LaPorte, New Carlisle, South Bend, Mishawaka, Osceola, Elkhart, Dunlap, Goshen, Ligonier, Limmel, Wolf Lake, Churubusco and Fort Wayne to the Indiana and Ohio State line.
- No. 3. The road beginning at the Indiana and Illinois state line, extending thence easterly through Terre Haute, Brazil, Knightsville, Purnamville, Stilesville, Plainfield, Indianapolis, Greenfield, Knightstown, Lewisville, Straughn, Cambridge City, Centerville and Richmond to the Indiana and Ohio State line.
- No. 4. The road beginning at Evansville, extending thence easterly through Chandler, Boonville, Genryville, Dale, Huntingburg, Jasper, Haysville, Kellersville, Crystal, Hillham, French Lick, Wet Baden, Paoli, Orleans, Mitchell, Bedford, Leesville, Medora, Vallonia, Brownstown, Seymour, Hayden, North Vernon, Nebraska, Holton, Versailles, Elrod, Dillsboro, Aurora and Lawrenceburg to the Indiana and Ohio state line.

Indiana's unique county road numbering system
Their being numbered according to a "meridian" baseline should be mentioned (similar to latitude and longitude). Is there a link or page devoted to this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.86.234.31 (talk • contribs)

Alternate signage in 70s
I seem to remember (and it is bugging the daylights out of me) in the mid-to-late 70s that the state of Indiana experimented with some signs that were the same size and shape as the present signs, but had a dark blue field and yellow numbers/text, not unlike the state flag. I also seem to remember with the signs, beneath the number was the phrase "Fasten Seat Belts". If memory serves, I seem to recall one on IN 2 near US 30 in Valpo, and on IN 43 near Lafayette. Redlinks need renaming

State Road 39
There are redlinks for State Road 39 (south) and State Road 39 (north). However, the main article already describes both routes. There are many examples of other Indiana State Roads with multiple sections described in a single article (such SR 43 and SR 48) so I'm not sure why SR 39 would require separate articles for each section. - The two State Road 39s are completely different routes, just like State Road 4 and 8. That means that the two routes will have different route descriptions, different history, etc. However, if a route was continuous before it was split (State Road 3), then only one article is needed. In this case, SR 39 follows the principles of SR 4 and 8: making separate articles and then turning the main SR 39 article into a dab. —O (说 • 喝) 00:28, 04 October 2007 (GMT)

Compression of the list
Following the deletion of the state roads template which was intended to increase the ease of access to the pages of the Indiana State Road System, I have used ((Col-break)) to condense the list to an easy to find format. Since all of the State Roads each have a page, I found no need for information on the road to be listed. Instead select the road you want to see and there you go. I also changed them to correspond to their route signs, like has been done on many other state route lists. This allowed me to condense the list further and resulted in a well organized selection of roads from which a specific route can be chosen, removing the reason for the template's existence. Minor change in Numbering Exceptions
I think that SR's 56 and 62 should be removed from the exceptions list. While they are sort of diagonal, they 1) do not angle across the entire state, and 2) have to adapt both to geography (irregular borders due to the Ohio River) and terrain. Despite these factors causing cris-crossing of E-W routes, they still generally hold to the numbering system. SR 68 would be more logical exception, since it never strays below SR 66. SR 70 could also be considered an exception as well, but it is south of a good portion of IN 66, so this could be debated as well. Just some food for thought, if it sounds like a good idea cool, if not that's cool too.Mtndrums (talk) 07:09, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
