This addition of an external link was reverted. I think the EL is a good resource for finding many other similar lists than can be shown in the article, and think the reversion was not a good idea. I see nothing in WP:ELNO that would indicate the link is not appropriate to the article. In particular, EL:NO says the following are okay: "Sites that fail to meet criteria for reliable sources yet still contain information about the subject of the article from knowledgeable sources." • "from knowledgeable sources" If it was reliable at all, it would be included in the list itself. Instead, it just looks to be some amateur site that use tons of unreliable sources that we just got done removing (and even includes a link back to Wikipedia).   • The "knowledgeable" bar is pretty low in this case, since it's just a list of links. Also, it's not a blog or fansite, I don't know where you are getting that. They aren't inserting their own opinions. What the site *is*, however, is a useful resource for readers wanting to do further research. SharkD  Talk  22:23, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
• I'm OK with the link being added. The site definitely has issues, but it does compile information from many knowledgeable sources and provides a nice directory, so I think it satisfies WP:ELMAYBE #3 and #4: A well-chosen link to a directory of websites or organizations. and Sites that fail to meet criteria for reliable sources yet still contain information about the subject of the article from knowledgeable sources.     • You are correct that not all their lists are from reliable sources, but I don't think we need to carry that level of scrutiny for an external link. I see Moby Games in external links all the time and isn't that based off user submitted content? I think the site provides some additional interesting information not included on the WP page, and it has enough of a backend explanation of where they got their data and how they calculated it for readers to research and make their own conclusions. I think that's satisfactory enough for an external link, as if to say "hey, if you want to continue researching this topic, this page might help". But I could go with it or without it. New list by Polygon

So Polygon just published a five-part list of their 500 greatest games of all time, which should be usable here. However, would we only use games that fall in the top 100? Or would a game ranked 423rd that already has two other publications that list it in their top 100 be added to the list? ~ Dissident93 ^(talk) 20:22, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

I vote to include them all but I'm OK with either way. Since we're not weighing list rank (i.e. a 10 vs. 20), the length of the list shouldn't matter. Some of the lists have 50, some have 200. Fair enough. A game listed in the 400s isn't very likely to be listed in the top 100s in other publications anyway. Are we going to do the spreadsheet sorting again? Just a list of the games with two sources isn't helpful in the long run because new lists may grant games entry into that list and you wouldn't know it. The best way to maintain the list is through one master spreadsheet. I will volunteer to continue maintaining the master spreadsheet, but I don't want to be the one transcribing a 500 game list into the same format as the above lists...*nose goes*... For what it's worth, I am firmly on the "just use the top 100" side of the equation. What if somebody makes a list of the best 1000 games ever? 5000? It's disproportionate influence. Have a shorter and more powerful resulting list IMO. SnowFire (talk) 06:31, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

I would be fine with including such lists as long as they fulfilled the other requirements. Not all lists are ranked, after all. At present, there are 213 games on the list, and these additions will bring that number to 241, a reasonable number for a list that encompasses all video games. Soul Calibur

Soul Calibur was originally released for the System 12 Namco arcade board. The "original platform" field for that game says "Dreamcast", so I'm going to fix it. 82.213.133.85 (talk) 21:28, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

My point doesn't really have to do with worries that the main list will be too long and unwieldly (which can be dealt with by threshold changes, sure); it has to do with basically "weighting" certain lists more than others simply because they're longer. I would be against having one list of 100 count double compared to another list of 100 as well; letting a list of 200 have double the votes vs. a list of 100 also seems wrong. But... whatever. Question on more sources

I can see at least two mistakes on that list right off the bat, which is that it lists the 2001 Game Informer list as "Staff", when it was actually a reader poll, and lists the EGM lists' platforms as "All" when they only cover console games. I think we've got just about everything that qualifies so far under these criteria: reliable source, no era restrictions, no platform restrictions, staff-chosen, and not "most important" or "most influential" but "best". I spent quite awhile scouring Google a few months and only came up with like 3-4 lists that weren't here already. Nevertheless, I'll check out the page and see if there's anything to add. Okay, so it looks like only Entertainment Weekly's 2003 list meets the criteria. The only knock against it is that two of its three criteria are "pop-cultural importance" and "impact in shaping the medium", but the other is "replayability"--which presumably means that they're games they personally like to play--so it still looks acceptable. I'll type up the list shortly, but it looks like Everquest, Jedi Knight, Max Payne, Daytona USA, and Joust will all be added as the result of its incorporation.

As for the other lists, I thought maybe Gamepro's top 20 would qualify, but its introduction explicitly says the list is for the "most innovative" games. Gamespy's top 50 caught my eye, but it was a poll of industry figures rather than chosen by the editors, and likewise for Kotaku's top 10. Phediuk (talk) 20:21, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

Also, C&VG's list is a user poll; we want only editor-chosen lists for this page. Edge's 2007 list is also partially a user poll. NowGamer's list is not for the greatest games but for the greatest retro games. Also, the GamesRadar list does not include Sega Rally, period; I have no idea what that page is citing. For the record, Outrun used to be included here, it only got removed once the qualification for five separate publications recently went in effect due to the list becoming a bit bloated. Outrun is currently listed in four publications, one short of the requirement; this page formerly (and the Outrun page currently) mistakenly cite it from FHM's list, when FHM actually lists Turbo Outrun, not the original. A few of the other lists on the Outrun page don't meet the criteria for this page (e.g. there's a "greatest coin-op games" list cited there.) So Outrun does not make the cut, but is a game to keep an eye out for later, since it only needs one more unique publication (note that it appears on both the 1996 and 1999 Next Generation lists, so it's on five lists, but from four publications.) Yes this list used to be completely different. It looked like THIS. Like you said it aggregated any source that even mentioned a game may be the best of all time. Editors were just adding sources to support their favorite game and it was getting messy. Many of the games were not even included on the sources provided. The games in 2014 were not exceptional I guess haha. Kinda joking there, but really...we need five sources to list a game, and 2014 was not that long ago, so it seems no game from 2014 was good enough to appear consistently in the few lists published since then. We originally had one in the first stages of the massive cleanup, but I removed it because I thought it was just bloating the list. Listing publishers over developers help set a more consistent standard due to the fact they usually own the copyright of the game, with the exact studio involved for some series changing on a game-to-game basis. Nobody opposed the move when I did it (until now), so I would think that most would have agreed with it. And while I agree that giving credit to the developers would be a fair thing to do, I just don't think it's as important as the publishers here. However, I do oppose replacing the publisher column here with the developers, per the OP. I don't really see the need, to be quite honest. Publishers are generally simpler to determine since virtually all games are initially published by only one, and they tend to own the games in question anyway. Listing developers gets messy when multiple studios develop a game (many of the later games on the list) or if the developer is ambiguous (e.g., who should be credited for Zork?) Undertale On this List

It was notable for it's amazing writing and characters and intriguing gameplay, and won many Game of the Year awards. "). It's just made clear by context - and in this case, "List of" and "video games" plural make clear that's the intended meaning. In that article, "the best" is used in a singular sense, not in a plural sense like this article does. In the best films article, only the singular film considered the best ever by each list are included, while all the films that ranked #2 or below are excluded (except maybe on the genre or country lists). Whereas this article includes most of the games that have been mentioned on various top 100 lists, limited only by some arbitrary cut-off point set by editors (five lists). As a result, this list has become bloated with nearly 200 games, almost defeating the purpose of the article. A better title for this article would be "List of video games considered among the best", which is a more accurate and concise description of what this article is actually about, since it's listing the games considered among the best, not just the ones considered the very best. Adding "among" is either a pointless addition of a word in an already-long title, or else an invitation to scope creep the article massively to "here's a list of 3000 pretty good games". As has already been explained, "best" referring to a group is perfectly common and normal English. (de-indent) Re opening sentence: Yes, opening sentences frequently use longer or extra-precise forms. That's perfectly healthy and normal; note that the article is at Rhode Island, not Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. The fact that the longer form is mentioned in the first sentence isn't a sign that the article title is somehow "wrong". The short version isn't not representing the article content, it's just a shorter way of saying the same thing. The current title isn't perfect, so feel free to suggest alternatives, but I don't see what you think "among" is adding in terms of value to the article title. Even if some reader comes in with your misconception about the grounds of the list, it will immediately be dispelled by the lede - which, again, is very common on Wikipedia. The article title is not expected to explain everything about the article in precision detail.

Re your second comment, there is no "twisting" going on here of meaning. As I linked to the definition above, "best" can already refer to a group, and is always going to since this is a matter of clashing opinion. I don't buy at all that it's confusing or misleading. I can't speak to the standard the film article uses, but for what it's worth, this article DID used to have a special section devoted to just the #1 on the lists - it was very bad and some bizarre biased attempt to prove that Ocarina of Time was the best ever and used terrible sourcing. I think the current version is far better and less "noisy" than a #1-only list would be. Additionally, these entries are quite concise and short, so I don't consider the list bloated at all when you consider the sheer number of platforms games have been on - much less of an issue with films.

Re your third comment - heh, ninja'd above, I already talk a bit about it. Personally I think such a list of #1 only would be less useful and less interesting, but go ahead and look in the archives if you want to see an idea of what it might look like. I feel List of video games considered among the best is a better title for the article, for the reasons I've already given above. Stating the best is ambiguous and could be interpreted in different ways (e.g. singular or plural), whereas stating among the best is less ambiguous as it can only be interpreted in a plural sense. But considering what you said above (that it could open up the article to becoming even more bloated), I think a better title would probably be List of video games considered among the best of all time. Which I believe would be the most concise description for this article.

I remember what the article was like last year, bizarrely ranking games based on how many lists they appeared on, which of course was a bad idea, so I agree the current version of the article is an improvement. But it's still not good enough, as the list is still bloated. This is the only considered the best list to include ~170 entries. In comparison, List of films considered the best, List of novels considered the greatest of all time, List of association football players considered the greatest of all time, etc. only list a dozen or two entries. Also, all of these articles use the best or the greatest in a singular sense, not in a plural sense like this article does.

My proposal is just doing what List of films considered the best does, where it lists some reputable publications, and then states which film each one selected as the best ever (without unnecessarily ranking by number of appearances). And it resolves the issue about representation by having separate sections for genres and countries. While there are many platforms, you could limit it to just PC, console, arcade and mobile (instead of listing every platform). I think that would be an improvement over the current bloated version of the article. Either that, or just rename the current title to something less ambiguous (possibly List of video games considered among the best of all time, like I suggested above). Honestly, we could probably get rid of the platform field if that's the main issue you have with it (not exactly the most relevant thing in terms of the scope). Also, we already had a form of your suggestion on an older revision of the page (one you claim you are aware of), which was removed because we decided to just go by listing by how often the game is mentioned in "best of all time" lists over just how many #1s it received. I think numbering how many times a game appears on a list is just as bad as numbering how many times it appeared at #1. Which is why the current version of the article is an improvement over both of those older versions, as it doesn't mention how many times a game appeared on these lists. As a reader, I'd be more interested to know what do certain reputable publications consider to be the best ever (e.g. IGN, Edge, Game Informer, etc.), which is essentially what List of Game of the Year awards does. That article simply lists what each publication awarded as their GOTY. But sure, I think a simple title change would be a better idea, which was my original suggestion. Fair enough. I guess I'll separate my reply into three sections: Given its current shape, what is the best title? What should the breadth of this article be? And what should the methodology be?

For the current article's title (if it remains unchanged in content), I think we've both said our piece. I respect that you think that a longer title would be clearer about what the article "really" is; hopefully you also understand my point that the current title is, at least, not inaccurate, and any possible confusion on scope can be cleared up by the lede paragraph. If you want, go ahead and file a WP:RM, but let's hash out the scope issue first which might render the issue moot.

For the breadth of the article, I guess I don't see ~170 entries as a big deal, at least when it's done in strict tabular form without any long explanations for why (which is good, IMO, it'd be a magnet for WP:PEACOCK words and OR bloat with gushing about how good something is - just click the link for the game's article for more). List of important operas is ~320 operas. That's fine. This article is still quite short by Wikipedia standards. That said, if you really felt strongly about this, we can already tweak the size of the resulting list by adjusting how many sources are required to show up - e.g. change the requirement to 6 sources or 7 sources, with the downside of making it extra-difficult for recent games to break into the list.

For the methodology, I think the "here is the very best" approach works better for very respected sources that are already doing aggregation. The film article is using reputable critic polls very prominently, as an example. This kind of thing inherently requires some aggregation, because it isn't shocking or surprising for any one reputable critic's list to have a few weird or unusual touches. If we did something similar here, then we'd be applying undue weight to "In a 2009 listicle, Random IGN Writer said that Bubble Bobble is the best game of all time." With aggregation, the unusual picks fall away and only the consistent ones everyone like remain. That said, if you really want to, we could try doing both? e.g. bring back the "just #1"s list and include prose, but have it be a separate section at the end of the article. Feel free to draft up what it might look like. I'd warn you that the risk of original research is even worse for the #1 list than we already have for our own aggregation, but sure, maybe it could work. It makes sense for the list of important operas to have ~320 entries since the title itself is just list of important operas instead of list of operas considered the best. The latter would significantly limit the scope, like what other considered the best articles do (each one limited to a dozen or two entries). However, raising the requirement to 6 or 7 lists could work too, if it can bring down the number of games to around, say, 100 games.

I was going to suggest that, for the second publication list below (the one that has List 1, List 2, List 3, etc.), just add a column that states what each of those lists selected as their best game (e.g. one list could say Tetris, another Mario, another Zelda, another Last of Us, etc.). Where exactly the dividing line is drawn for how many games to include is inherently a matter of taste. I think that the current style of article which has about 3-6 games per year from 1990-2010 is about right when you consider that these games are split across PCs and various consoles. Next time there's an update - e.g. more lists are added - we can have a soft poll about the requirements that should be set, but I guess I don't see the benefit in narrowing things down TOO much. For the opera example, I personally think you're putting too much emphasis on the exact phrasing of the article title - the better question is if the content is useful / interesting / verifiable? No matter what the opera list is called, it's a useful and well-researched resource based on "what operas are closely discussed in 9 scholarly books." In the same way, I think there's too much worry about angels-dancing-on-pins semantics of how best the best is. What this article really is is "List of games that consistently appear on game journalism critic top games list", which is explained in the lede, and for that a mildly longer list is fine no matter what the article title is.

For the publication list, I personally wouldn't be a fan of such an addition of their #1 game. See above; it puts undue emphasis on each idiosyncratic publication. We could do it if these were really, really reliable sources, but they aren't. So the only "safe" option that avoids WP:UNDUE is aggregation and a separate list. So it might be okay to have a separate "popular #1s" that only include games we can cite several lists as including them as #1, since the reliability of any one source is less important then. Although really, I'd say that using strict top 10s or strict top 5s from each list might work better if you wanted a "deluxe" list option just so that the results are less noisy. (By noisy I mean that the #1 role is erratic, 10x critics all picking a game as their #2 game would be "worse" than a single critic picking that game as their #1 game, which seems really wrong, and definitely not how Sight & Sound and the like conduct their film critic poll rankings.) If the intention of the article is to be more along the lines of List of important operas rather than List of films considered the best, then I think the title should reflect that. Because the article is titled more like the best films article, when in reality the article reads more like the important operas article.

I don't see how it's WP:UNDUE to simply list what each publication chose as their best game. That's no different to what List of Game of the Year awards does, which lists what each publication chose as their GOTY. Also, if we went with the aggregation approach, then we'd end up with only several #1 games (probably just Tetris, Mario, Zelda, and nothing else), which would probably be worse (and somewhat similar to the earlier version of the article which you were criticizing earlier). I understand your point about video games not having anything equivalent to Sight & Sound, but it doesn't have anything equivalent to the Oscars either, so the GOTY article just lists what each reputatable publication chose as their GOTY, which I believe should also be done for this article. I'm neutral on the idea. Maestro makes a good point that you can argue it's similar to "List of Game of the Year awards". That said, I'd argue that GOTY sources tend to be a bit stronger with less risk of cherry-picking sources, since basically every reputable journalism source makes one; for this article, there are hundreds of list we could pick between, so there's a greater risk of OR in choosing which #1s to highlight. That said, I could see a section dedicated to just #1s coming back, or even in the current form that Maestro suggested if others chime in in support of it, but I also think Dissident is being quite reasonable with backburnering it for now.
