Directory suggestion[edit]

It looks like you only have top ranking directories listed here. I would like to recommend a specialized directory that promotes green and renewable energy websites. There are over 1,400 quality sites listed in over 140 categories. They also review top sites on the main page. All directory services are provided free of charge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shishdas (talkcontribs) 05:56, 18 August 2010 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

I have a directory which is unique in some way. Hoping it can be listed in wikipedia. and —The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs).

Online list of web directories[edit]

Hi, I would like to add an external link to a list of the more well known web directories - List of web directories on Each directory is hyperlinked, meaning it's easy to navigate to them from the page. Thanks. Aminto 09:43, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

The problem is notability. What makes this site more notable than the thousands of others out there? I'm sorry, but unless you can show something historical or very notable about the site no link to it will survive long on this article. --StuffOfInterest 10:57, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Similarly I'd like to recommend my own resource The Web Directory List What makes it notable? Well there are a number of Web Directory Lists out there, but this one doesn't rank sites based on how much they are prepared to pay. It's non-commercial! Plus it also has some cool features like enabling your to browse the list by region and sort the directories by inclusion cost/ PageRank and alphabetically by name and url.

Moreover this is more extensive than the Wikipedia article, allows for more detailed sorting and browsing and finally is very useful to webmaster's looking to promote their site. Its also updated monthly. DavidParkes 01:08, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

I would like to add the following link: Web Directory with Automated Link Submission with focus on automated category recommender based on machine learning methods. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Proffviktor (talkcontribs) 20:15, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

As explained at WP:NOT and WP:EL Wikipedia is not a platform for lists of internet links. If the directory has received sufficient attention to be considered notable by WP standards, it should become the subject of its own article, and that article could be added to this list. Until then, it does not belong on the list. --Orlady (talk) 21:44, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

The good, the bad and the ugly[edit]

Gee, that is difficult. I thought within an article called List of web directories there would be many links to web directories. But there were not. So I thought of adding a link to which at least lists about 1,000 existing web directories. But than I learned that Wikipedia were not about links - which is true but as well it should not be about "without links" as links are the main idea of the internet and an important way to further information. So but nevertheless I do not dare to add the link above to the main article but bring it into discussion as the edit page of the main article asked me to do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Birnabaum (talkcontribs) 16:44, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Defunct directories on the list[edit] mentioned on the list of web directories is no longer a directory.

Why is listed here? Compare its list of newspapers with the list of newspapers on

The latter list is clearly ranked according to importance besides having addresses and phone numbers.

Or compare with

Surprised you haven't yet listed this directory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Newbie765 (talkcontribs) 03:37, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

This entire article is a joke. There's the defunct pages listed noted above; the ridiculous criterion that there has to be a Wikipedia article about the directories listed; the fact that most of these sites have a small number of links, and are clearly attempts to make money. Absolutely pathetic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 14:26, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

If you find flaws in the list, feel free to improve it. However, this article is not intended to help advertise your site. Please respect the community consensus and stop adding external links here. - Eureka Lott 03:03, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Starting Point[edit]

Starting Point,, is a search engine, not a web directory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 20:21, 11 July 2016 (UTC)

The article Starting Point Directory says it is both. Richard-of-Earth (talk) 05:37, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
