Authorship date

[edit]

What should the authorship date be? The text of this article states that the taxon was only considered valid upon the 1876 paper. However, the listed authorship date in the taxobox was recently changed to 1869, on the basis that the taxon was actually described in that paper after all. But if that is so, why is it written in the text that it was only valid from 1876? Is it possible that the initial 1869 description was insufficient to be a valid description?

Few papers seem to refer to this taxon, but these two refer to the authorship as "Seeley, 1869":

  • Le Loeuff, J., Suteethorn, S. and Buffetaut, E., 2013. A new sauropod dinosaur from the Albian of Le Havre (Normandy, France). Oryctos, 10, pp.23-30.
  • Knoll, F., COLLETÉ, C., DUBUS, B. and PETIT, J.L., 2000. On the presence of a sauropod dinosaur (Saurischia) in the Albian of Aube (France). Geodiversitas, 22(3), pp.389-394.

Although, interestingly, this one seems to refer to the authorship as "Seeley, 1869, 1876"?:

  • Calvo, J.O. and Bonaparte, J.F., 1991. Andesaurus delgadoi gen. et sp. nov.(Saurischia-Sauropoda), titanosaurid dinosaur from the Río Limay Formation (Albian-Cenomanian), Neuquén, Argentina. Ameghiniana, 28, pp.303-310.

Note that this also has relevance to the list of years in paleontology pages. Currently this taxon's description is listed in the 1876 in paleontology page. With no reference, of course. Those articles are a mess.
