Name!

[edit]

Hi, I'm a local and the lighthouse sits in "Chandler-Hovey" park. The lighthouse itself is also sometimes refered to as "Chandler-Hovey Lighthouse". I dunno how official that is, but it should at least be mentioned.

More important, tho, is the fact that NO ONE calls it "Marblehead Light"!! It is either "The Lighthouse", if talking locally, or "Marblehead Lighthouse" if addressing outsiders. In fact, I don't know anyone who uses "light" for "lighthouse", even in a general sense -- is that a regional thing?

Worse yet, the term "Marblehead Light" is quite common here and refers unambiguously to our POWER COMPANY. This article needs to be moved.

Alas, but I don't know how to do it. Someone? 66.105.218.6 (talk) 03:45, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The real fact is that while what you say is true, the National Park Service call it Marblehead Light, hence the article name National Park Service. "Marble Light". Retrieved 15 July 2012.Geotek (talk) 19:02, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well that is annoying to say the least! If we at least used "light" as shorthand for "lighthouse", one could say their naming is a bit "ambiguous". But where we don't even do THAT, it's just plain...WRONG.
Again, I suspect it's a regional thing. Or maybe NPS jargon -- I could easily IMAGINE "light" being a colloquial term for "lighthouse", but in my experience, it just ISN'T. Except maybe in their offices.
And what's up with you calling it MARBLE light???? Just trying to confuse me?! 66.105.218.30 (talk) 02:19, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your logic, one day the feds, state and even USCG will all agree on the same name for something, until then we unfortunately have to go with the "official" line.Geotek (talk) 14:46, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that is wiki policy. Mitt Romney, Madonna, Lady Gaga, etc. are all listed under their popular appelations, not their "official" names. I'm sure there are geographic examples as well (too lazy to google).
What's wrong with filing this under "Marblehead Lighthouse", and having variant names in the lede?
As it is, this page doesn't even google up for anyone seaching on "Marblehead Lighthouse"! Err on the side of caution, at least -- surely WAAAAAAAAY more people are going to be searching as "lighthouse" over "light", no? 66.105.218.42 (talk) 09:07, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
