Mayapuri radiological accident[edit]

The following section could be further developped on the main page. Thanks for contributions, Shinkolobwe (talk) 21:28, 9 May 2010 (UTC).[reply]

In April 2010, the locality of Mayapuri has been affected by a serious radiological accident.[1] A gamma irradiator (Gammacell produced by Theratronics in Canada) no longer in used since 1985 in a chemistry laboratory at Delhi University was auctioned on a scrap market of Mayapuri in February 2010.[2] The orphan source was sent to one of the many scrap yard existing at Mayapuri and dismantled by workers not aware of the hazard related to the highly radioactive content of the machine. During the demolishing operations to recover metal scraps, the lead shielding protecting the radioactive source was removed and the source itself damaged. As a consequence, height persons were directly exposed to the gamma-rays of the 60Co source contained in the Gammacell. One already dies while two others are severely affected.

A national radiation emergency response team in charge of the remediation of the place where the tragedy occurred recovered most of the cobalt-60 needles contained in the source.[3][4] It is not the first time such a radiation accident occur in an emerging country. Previous cases were reported in Mexico and in Brazil, in which the same scenario developped. The case of Goiânia accident in Brazil was one of the worst.

Number of radioactive pieces[edit]

In 2010 Mayapuri radiological accident section it is stated that the source is cut into eleven pieces. Later it is said that police recovered all ten sources. Which is correct? 194.157.143.114 (talk) 13:12, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
