Not an adaptation of the Broadway musical

The Broadway musical has a completely different plot, about a segregation-era white radio deejay who is the first to play "colored" music in the 1950s.

The film described here takes place in modern times, is about a singer-songwriter, and is an independent film. Nowhere in the references do they say this is an adaptation of the musical.

There are some plans for a movie based on the Broadway musical but it has not been produced.
