Spanish Naval Ranks[edit]

Captain of a frigate could be capitán de fragata, Frigate Captain. And the Marines use army-like ranks (Colonel, Lieutenant, etc.), so that Álava was a naval officer, not a marine officer. According to the Spanish Wikipedia, Álava was teniente de fragata in 1794 and teniente de navío in 1802, being promoted once again after Trafalgar.
