Hostile code in Miniclip games?

Two security firms, listed in the article, claim that Miniclip games contain hostile code in miniclipgameloader.dll. No verification to the contrary was provided when an anonymous user removed the claim of hostile code, so I reverted that. Any other hard info available? --John Nagle 20:44, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

It's nice to have a dedicated publisher on Wikipedia like you. Just to help you out on this one... Prevx currently says it is "good" and "safe" not "hostile" as you say they do: http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq731b174387-mini57835/miniclipgameloader.dll.html I would suggest that you remove this paragraph because Prevx's latest information shows it to be inaccurate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.54 (talkcontribs)

CastleCops now lists it as hostile code. See CastleCops report. Also, the claim that the file has been removed from Miniclip is false. It is still available from Miniclip at [1]. --John Nagle 21:26, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

Castlecops does not call it "hostile", they say it is "not required". Also, the file does not exist where you claim it does. The link you post shows that it is not found/does not exist. Any software you install on your computer could do bad things. "Malware", "trojan" and "hostile" code are defined by "deliberate harmful intent" of the software not automated machine analysis of code as you are pointing to. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/malware —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.54 (talkcontribs)

Nagle, hi, I have researched your article "Hostile Code" and list your mistakes here. 1. Misquoted PrevX by saying that they said the code is "hostile". They never said the code is "hostile". In fact they say it is "Safe" and "Good". http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq731b174387-mini57835/miniclipgameloader.dll.html 2. Misquoted Castlecops by saying that they said code is "hostile" when they didn't. 4. Misquoted Greatis by saying that they said code is "hostile" when they didn't. They say it is "at your option". 5. You do not show malicious or hostile "intent" as your article claims. 6. There is no miniclipgameloader.dll code on the miniclip.com website page that you claim. 7. The burden is upon you to post accurate information on Wikipedia not for others to disprove your wrong information as you ask them to do in the discussion notes. 8. Prevx does not say "some miniclip games install a file" as you claim. 9. You do not show a link to where this code is found or supposedly installed. If you claim something exists or if something has a hostile intent you must show it to be so. "Wikipedia was not made for opinion, it was made for fact." - Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.31.54 (talkcontribs)

CastleCops and PrevX still have warning notices on their sites. The article has been updated to link to the specific warning pages in each case. I agree that the Greatis message wasn't clear, so I took that out. Incidentally, it's best to register for a Wikipedia account if you're going to engage in difficult issues. It's possible that Miniclip is no longer using this particular form of hostile code, so I changed the article to the past tense. --John Nagle 17:51, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

10. You only show links to website homepages and an old wrong report which has been corrected here to say "safe and "good" http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq731b174387-mini57835/miniclipgameloader.dll.html

11. No one has said it is "hostile" as you wrongly claim again.

12. You again do not show anywhere or anyone saying it is "hostile".

Nagle, please read the above 12 points which still apply to your bogus article on Hostile code and learn about malware from the dictionary. It is not based on website homepages or automated software scans as you mistakenly think but on the intent of the software: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/malware

Nagle, if you now re-post this inaccurate article of yours, you would now knowingly and willingly, with reckless disregard, publish inaccurate material, making you (and any associates) automatically liable and obviously severely degrade your reputation as a publisher on Wikipedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.31.54 (talkcontribs)

The phrase "hostile code" is a generic term which covers adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, etc. SecurityFocus uses the broad definition "By "hostile code", we mean any process running on a system that is not authorized by the system administrator, such as Trojans, viruses, or spyware." As for the point that the specific attacks mentioned may not currently be on Miniclip, that's not a reason to remove them from Wikipedia. Wikipedia covers past events, too.
If you represent Miniclip, how about providing a signed declaration under oath from an officer of the company that no program on Miniclip contains adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, backdoors, or any other form of hostile code? That would be notable enough to go in the article. --John Nagle 18:41, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Nagle, the burdon is on you and not others to state fact and not your opinion becasue you wrote the innacurate article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.31.54 (talkcontribs)

Please sign your comments. Also, if you're going to edit Wikipedia regularly and engage in discussions, please register for an account, so we know who's saying what. Thanks. --John Nagle 16:11, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

Most recent information shows it to be "safe and "good" http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq317624173792-MINI40800/MINICLIPGAMELOADER%5B1%5D.DLL.html Removed article because proven to be wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.154 (talkcontribs)

That's a different DLL. "MINICLIPGAMELOADER[1].DLL" vs. "MINICLIPGAMELOADER.DLL". It's on the record that Miniclip distrhttp://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/images/button_sig.png

Your signature with timestampibuted hostile code, and so that stays in the article. Even if they stop. It's now part of their Permanent Record. --John Nagle 17:42, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Nagle is proven wrong for on the 14th point: Most recent information shows it to be "safe and "good" http://fileinfo.prevx.com/adware/qq731b21097560-MINI57835/MINICLIPGAMELOADER.DLL.html Removed article because Nagle and his personal opion are proven to be wrong again. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.154 (talkcontribs)

15. Security firms update their reports with the most updated and accurate information because their automated systems routinely flag up code innacurately. That is why their old reports are proven wrong when they issue new information. Wikipedia is an encylypedia for facts not for posting your innacurate personal opinions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.154 (talkcontribs)

Added a new report of "high risk malware" in a Miniclip download, from Sunbelt Software. --John Nagle 17:20, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Your "new" report has no date only a copyright notice. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.154 (talkcontribs)

No sources say the code was installed by games. Nagle appears to have made this up.

Info about RS on miniclip

Here is the rundown on the rumor that RuneScape is unsafe to run from Miniclip.com. First of all, just because they are an official affiliate does not mean that they are safe to play RuneScape on.

Reason one: it is known that some miniclip games install a trojan. It is possible that the trojan could log your keypresses and send it into a third party, and that would lead to your password being revealed when you type it in.
Reason two: because Miniclip is using an Iframe to display RuneScape, it is possible that they could have a flash, javascript, or other object running outside the frame capturing your keypresses, which would lead to your username and password being compromised.

I will look through all running objects and their code (this excludes the RS client, of course), and will see if anything contains code that could steal passwords and other things, and when I am done with the research I will either post it on this talk page or on my user page (I will not put it on the article at first because that would violate the "No original research" wikipedia rule. Wikipeedio 01:35, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

This is not true. Runescape who licenses their game for use on Miniclip would report it if it were true.

The top 10 games

Good cleanup job. Finally someone got rid of that corny "top 10 games" list. Of course though, just like on any other page: when you remove something that many users like to have, it causes commotion. So, any users that wish to dispute the change, please do so below, instead of getting into a revert war. Thanks, WIKIPEEDIO 14:42, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

Tetris

Miniclip no longer has Tetris, and it's now hard to find a good Tetris game online, because so many sites linked to it. Any clue what happened? 71.252.104.44 22:01, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Here is one. Not Miniclip though. --Thorpe | talk 13:16, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Miniclip never had tetris on the site.

Go to www.freetetris.org it works best. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.247.165.195 (talk) 21:51, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Go to learn2type.com and create an account. Then go to member tests or something like that at the top. Look all around the page and their should be something that says games. Click on it and their should be a link to tetris.

This really doesn't have to do with miniclip but who cares. Dragonrider27 23:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Webby Awards

There are two types of webby awards, Academy voting and Public voting. They are called the Webby Award and the Webby Peoples Voice Award. They are both webby awards but are voted on differently. When the New York times or anyone else talks about the webby awards they refer to both types of Webby awards academy voting and public voting. Miniclip was given a physical Webby Award trophy by the Webby Awards at the Webby Awards ceromony. You need to go the to webby website not wiki site to find out. "Additionally, the online community, through a public vote, will select a Winner from the nominees in each category. These entries receive a Webby People's Voice Award for Websites" - webbyawards.com http://www.webbyawards.com/webbys/awarding.php —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.7.30.154 (talkcontribs)

Established date?

When did Miniclip get established? I know it's really cool, but when did it get established? Factual80man
I don't know, but I've popped in and out of it since 2001. Then they mainly used shockwave. User:Lyradog User talk: Lyradog 01:36, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

You don't actually know, but you posted in your thoughts. Anyway, thanks for that information!Factual80man

Article Reworking

Hello, I spent some time and reworked the entire article, condensing and expanding on certain areas to keep up to date with the website and company. Parts of the article were extremely dated and there were a few sloppy minor edits thrown into the mix. If it's too much of an overhaul feel free to restore it. RadioFSoftware 07:29, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

downtime

do we need the downtime thing?

  • I would say no, since that seems to only effect the forums. RadioFSoftware 05:46, 26 July 2007 (UTC)
  • Downtime definitely does not just affect the forums. The forums are not down half the time of the Players Channel. When the forums are down they are back up within a few minutes. There is no word on if or when the Players Channel will be back. Maintenance mode has been ongoing for a year now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.226.17.8 (talk) 17:18, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
  • That's ridiculous - Players mode has nothing to do with this question, and it has not been down for over a year. Players first entered beta in January and has been closed for about 6 weeks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.78.250.223 (talk) 14:20, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Giant List of Games

Is this really needed in this article? The short paragraphs about the games seemed to be the best option, the list of games makes the entire page unnecessarily long. RadioFSoftware 05:48, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

I think the list should be removed per WP:NOT#DIR and WP:NOT#INFO. This list is unencyclopedic, complately useless and anyone searching for it just needs to go on the website. Canjth 21:54, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
I agree. It doesn't add anything to the article, even though it was obviously a lot of work for whoever typed it up. RicDod 20:56, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Website Folded?

Has the website folded? I tried going there today and I kept getting the message "Unable to select db: Unknown database 'miniclip'" Could it's demise be from the aforementioned malware? Maetrix 18:53, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

I've been unable to load miniclip.com for several months -- I keep getting "The page cannot be displayed." Anybody have any ideas why I'm having trouble? (Email removed. Spam concerns) -- Keo (talk) 20:15, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Had to remove your E-mail. Wikipedia frowns on placing it here, due to Spam concerns. Miniclip may have problems, and it has the Blaster worm on it. Had to replace a computer because of it. The place is infected. Powerzilla (talk) 22:45, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Somebody keeps changing the external Miniclip Link to miniclip-games.us which is not the correct site. The Z Games

There should be several differing game titles under Z, and I do not know why there are none there yet. At the time of writing, there are 37 games under the Z section on www.miniclip.com and 2 of those are challenge games (games in which you are able to challenge a range of other player's scores). These challenge games are named Zase Jumping, in which the objective is to land safely on the ground while at the same time you must made impact from a few metres above as soon as possible, making sure you land before the other players do so. The other challenge game is called Zloxorx, and is a puzzling game where you must get a 2x1x1 cuboid into a slot, which is usually on the other side of the gaming platform from where the starting point is located. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 13steve13 (talkcontribs) 11:29, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

There is a virus on the site called Blaster worm. Had to replace a $5,000 computer because of this damn thing. Powerzilla (talk) 20:07, 12 October 2008 (UTC)
