History
[edit]It is not clear if the trotting park and later race track are the same place, or just shae the name? Also, I have sources for races in the 1880s, so the 1896 date is misleading. W Nowicki (talk) 21:07, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
Move
[edit]On 15 May 2014, this article was moved from Narragansett Race Track to Narragansett Park wihtout discussion. Has the name changed over time? The only mention of the place's name that I found in the article was the paragraph Narragansett Park had taken its name from a defunct race track that had existed in Cranston, Rhode Island at the turn of the previous century. Narragansett Trotting Park hosted the great pacer Dan Patch - the "most famous" horse in the nation - twice during that period. In his second appearance, Dan Patch broke 2 minutes for the first time (1:59 1/2, 8/29/02).[7] The one-mile oval (Cranston Stadium sits on the current site) was paved and became the nations first automobile Super Speedway in 1915. The banked track was AAA sanctioned and, on September 18, 1915, its first race was won by Eddie Rickenbacker.[8]. Has this place been known by several names? Is Narragansett Race Track and Narragansett Park to same place or is Narragansett Race Track just part of Narragansett Park? In Historic Rhode Island Farms, by Robert A. Geake, he seems to make a distinction. page 23 --Bejnar (talk) 14:51, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- I moved it to Narragansett Park because as I was looking for sources related to the race track, the vast majority referred to it as Narragansett Park (including [1] [2] [3]). Also, the article itself already referred to the track as Narragansett Park, including in the opening sentence, so I though such a move would be uncontroversial. Narragansett Race Track appears to be another name used for the same track, as Geake uses the two names interchangeably to describe the same place --Hirolovesswords (talk) 15:42, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Spring, Summer and Autumn
[edit]The sentence Soon Narragansett was running three short meets in the Spring, Summer and Autumn. is supported by a web citation to http://finehomeservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/cool-4-seasons-spring-summer-autumn-winter.jpg, which is just a picture of trees in different seasons. Not only does the cited source add nothing, it does not appear connected to the article at all, except to poorly illustrate what the four seasons are. --Bejnar (talk) 14:51, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Poor lead
[edit]The current lead does not conform to the Wikipedia guidelines, which say The lead serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important aspects. The first sentence of current lead does provide context, but the rest of the lead reads like the first part of a history section. It also, at the end, has a non-encyclopedic tone. While the lead provides context, it does not state the notability of the park. It was only of the top three race tracks in New England in the years x to x. --Bejnar (talk) 15:02, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- I am in the midst of rewriting this entire article. Much of it is unreferenced and comes of as a personal essay. --Hirolovesswords (talk) 15:27, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that Track Records Narragansett Park be merged into Narragansett Park. The Track Records article is likely to remain a permanent stub, as there is little potential for future editing. Hirolovesswords (talk) 18:09, 19 May 2014 (UTC) Track Records Narragansett Park was an addendum to Narragansett Park until the entire article was changed and destroyed. - @W Nowicki: I know it has been over 10 years since you mentioned the possible inconsistency here but this is something I raised in the RfD as well so perhaps you will have something to add there. A7V2 (talk) 01:38, 12 April 2022 (UTC)
