Modernist Party
[edit]Hi, great work on the List of Prime Ministers of Greece. I was wondering about the correct translation for the Modernist Party. A few months ago, I had created Liberal Party (Greece) (1875) for this, but renamed it today. The difficulty is on how to translate Νεωτεριστικόν. I'm not a Greek speaker but asked some, and they say the word translates more as "innovative", with one person suggesting using the word "Neoterist", which also exists in English. I've checked the few reference books I have and none of them come up with a word for this particular party. What do you think?--Damac 14:19, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the encomia (another Greek word :) I am also struggling with the translation of the name of the party. My sense of the word is actually "progressive" in the American political vernacular (à la LaFollette), in that it was reformist and rejected the entire existing political structure of client-state parties (Russian, English, French) and the power of the king. However, the Greek word for Progressive is Proödeftiko, and so that won't work. I think 'innovative' or 'updated' captures the flavor, but sure doesn't sound like any party I have ever heard of :) So, I am interested in getting more views and making a decision. I will copy this to the talk page of the party. Cheers!Argos'Dad 19:09, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, best wait to let others voice their opinions. I had a look at one of Richard Clogg's books at he refers to the party as the "New Party". I googled that and it's common enough in other academic accounts. One to keep in mind I suppose.--Damac 21:32, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
- You know, that makes some sense. I could live with the New Party.Argos'Dad 17:29, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- I suppose "neoteric" does not exist as a word? Both New and Modernist Party are ok with me. There is no wxact translation. By the way you can see the template of the History of Greece project as it is now and the possibility to refer that this article is supported by the Politics and Politicians task force just writing: task force1=yes.--Yannismarou 18:57, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- 'Neoteric' is the correct translation. 'Neoteristic' means 'neologism'. I'm sure 'neoteric' can be understood even if we can be accused for dragging obscure words into the light of day!! •NikoSilver• 21:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Expanded this
[edit]preparatory to renaming it New Party (Greece). Is everyone okay with that?Argos'Dad 02:46, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Moved back
[edit]I moved this page back. It was originally moved since, according to the mover, there was also a New Party in 1950. Two years on, though, there was still no article. So let's have it at the logical place until we need to dab again, if ever. -Lilac Soul (talk • contribs • count) 12:24, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
