Talk:New product development

I cannot help feeling that this is a backward step - books by Pugh, Pahl & Beitz & Nam Suh and many others have been published that show both a long history of product design (Leonardo da Vinci iterated his ideas, I'm sure famous figures in other cultures will have done similar) and a modern, systematic approach. I particularly dislike the "Fuzzy front end" and "Fuzzy back end" - this seems to have little to do with Fuzzy Engineering, a distinct methodology, and in practice is not at all fuzzy - there can often be a distinct lack of specificity in the sales process but many industries employ Systems Engineers/Requirements Engineers/Concept Engineers who's daily lives accommodate creativity and who's outputs are anything but fuzzy. A modern gated product lifecycle methodology should start around identification of a potential market need/want and proceed right through to decommissioning/disposal/recycling.

NPD process[edit]

I have added a new section - NPD process structure - and some adjustments in the introduction. I think the whole page has to be restructured based on introduction and NPD process structure information. The marketing considerations must be erased, there is loads of ambiguous information. Marketing it is only considered at the Fuzzy Front End phase (idea generation). I have conducted research in NPD area and I have some more information to edit. Probably each phase should be discussed in particular, then the management approach at each stage. The idea is to start right, then build on...

Pprevos (talk) 00:39, 16 November 2015 (UTC) New Product Development is a term common to marketing. There is a broad literature that discusses the relationship between marketing and engineering in NPD. Engineering should be viewed as a boundary condition and not the driving force of NPD. When engineers design computers we get beige boxes, when marketers get involved we get the Mac. I see no need for a substantial edit of this article due to the fact that this is a common topic in marketing.
