Timeline
[edit]I'm not sure whether the timeline relates to the Railway line (as suggested by the preamble), or the docks in general, as the positioning of the "Timeline" heading in the title hierarchy would suggest. I assumed the latter, and added on the Newport Docks disaster (which I intend to work more info in later) but now I'm starting to doubt myself. Most of the chronology items seem to be duplicates of the chronology from the main page about the railway line. Displaced1980 (talk) 23:23, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Major change
[edit]There are a couple of warning flags on the page for this. In addition there is more railway material than docks material; although the railways' involvement has some relevance, the content is too intrusive here.
The problem is that there is a relative lack of source material. Even Hutton is mainly about railways, and photographs, with precious little textual history. Contemporary newspapers are not all that helpful either, with a lot of general waffle and not much hard factual material.
I'll edit the page shortly, but to comply with Wikipedia guidelines, it will be a fairly brief article. Afterbrunel (talk) 11:23, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- Do we have a separate article on the Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway? That was one of the six major railways grouped into the GWR (along with the Barry Railway, the Cambrian Railways, the Cardiff Railway, the Rhymney Railway, and the Taff Vale Railway) at the start of 1922. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 11:42, 6 June 2017 (UTC)
- AN&SWD&R article? Not yet, but I plan to write one.
- Whatever, I have had a shot at improving this (Docks) article; it is quite thin for the reason I mentioned above, but for now I don't see any way past that. I have removed almost all the railway material, as I think general readers find that annoyingly intrusive. Afterbrunel (talk) 07:23, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- I meant to add ... I am amazed that this article is categorised by WikiProjectPorts as low importance. The biggest docks in the world between 1875 and about 1960. The quality of the article is a different issue from its importance, of course. Afterbrunel (talk) 07:25, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- When abbreviating the name of the Alexandra (Newport and South Wales) Docks and Railway, railway books normally ignore the parenthesis and ampersands, using "ADR" or in some cases simply "AD". --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 13:48, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
