I think (although not certain about this) that the name comes from the Ui Neill dynasty of medieval Ireland (which ruled Ulster). The dynasty was founded by Niall of the Nine Hostages. This article is not quite encyclopedia material however, perhaps it should be replaced with a disambiguation page and just a short etymology. There already exists a page on the [wictionary] about the name 'Niall' and it conforms to a better standard. --Jasonm 21:27, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Niall IS an Irish name!

I think the page has been largely fixed since these posts, but I'm intrigued to know why there was confusion on the point of Niall being an Irish name in the first place? Cloud, Passionate or Avid?

The citation for these supposed meanings of Niall are to a list with zero sources. Unless someone has a credible source for these meanings I am removing this.
