He is also associated with the College de France, see http://www.college-de-france.fr/default/EN/all/his_cint/index.htm - I dont know how strong this association is. Plehn (talk) 09:44, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I saw him on 60 minutes this Paul Farmer he was talking to one of his patient in Tahiti that had cancer and he read her thank you note he could not finish it was so touching I nearly cried to see a man so dedicated in his work to genuinely help the poor and he did mention that health care should be free for all that need it. I really respect him god bless you Mr.Paul you are a great man. Jay Ramanathan (Malaysia)17 Aug 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.49.63.163 (talk) 09:26, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

He grew up in Weeki Wachee, not Brooksville. I know it implies otherwise in Mountains Beyond Mountains but I grew up in Hernando and have met him so I know this the edit is accurate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.200.40.45 (talk) 08:47, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

"His approach has its basis in ethnographic analysis and real world practicality."

This statement does not make sense to me or, I imagine, anyone who doesn't have a lot of background in this area.

Note that the article states both that Farmer lives in Cambridge and, in the "personal" section, states that Farmer lives in Rwanda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.14.67.60 (talk) 04:53, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Foreign Policy potential resource

He stated "The Tobin tax on financial transactions" was the Best Idea.[1] 99.181.130.83 (talk) 08:52, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

I do agree there should be a new image, but I don't think the new image is better than the old one, considering this one has other people in it. If this picture were cropped, it would be lower quality than the last one. –Temporal User (Talk) 01:08, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I didn't see where it was, but the relevant honors should be merged into the "Awards" section, if they're not already there. A few of the "honors" seem marginal, though. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 18:26, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Reason given was WP:INDISCRIMINATE. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 18:37, 6 December 2011 (UTC)
Who gives a fuck about his awards? What difference does it make to any Haitian peasant or health worker whether Farmer got an honorary doctorate from Columbia?
This awards list violates WP:INDISCRIMINATE Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information and WP:MEDMOS "Extract the pertinent information rather than just dumping low-level facts in a big list."
This article should instead discuss his ideas, a good collection of which he published in the New England Journal of Medicine. (Another good source is Democracy Now.)
One of his important ideas is that a health care system must be coordinated in an overall way, and that the US government disrupted the Haitian health care system by undermining Aristide and sending money instead to naive or sometimes politically-motivated "non-governmental organizations" which operated at cross purposes and sometimes were attacking the democratically-elected Aristide government. He discussed this in the NEJM. I think most of his NEJM articles are available free without subscription.
I thought I could find a good summary of those issues in this Wikipedia article, but I was disappointed.
Unless somebody can explain what purpose this list of awards serves, aside from glorification of a doctor who doesn't care about glorification, I'm going to delete the section
It's an insult to write about an activist without explaining his ideas. --Nbauman (talk) 17:33, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Unconvincing statement on UN role

The article states: "Farmer was appointed as the Deputy UN Special Envoy for Haiti, by US President Barack Obama, on August 11, 2009, and served in this role until 2012. In this role, Dr. Farmer supported Clinton and assisted in advancing their work with the UN on a day-to-day basis." This seems confused. The UN is an international organization, and as far as I know an individual government, even the US, cannot appoint someone to a UN position -- that would need to be done by the UN itself (presumably the Secretary General). Nandt1 (talk) 13:20, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

In view of the problematic nature of the earlier statement on Farmer's role for the UN (see above), I have replaced it with a statement drawn from his faculty page at Harvard. Nandt1 (talk) 16:45, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

OK, I now see the Clinton angle: Bill Clinton was serving as the Special Envoy, so Farmer became his Deputy. Hope this is now clear! Nandt1 (talk) 17:00, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Recent Photograph

Are there no recent pictures of Paul Farmer? He recently talked at my school, and he does not look like he did in the 50s.

Given that he was born in 1959, I would expect he does look different. This 2003 photo could be more recent, but he has not changed that much. 131.238.31.31 (talk) 18:22, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
