Was Pazin really made an administrative center of Istria County because of the development of the interior? Istria is not such a large county that it's interior couldn't be developed from, let's say, Pula, which is the city of a size and importance that dwarfs all other Istrian towns, especially Pazin. There are some insinuations that the reasons were of more political nature, Pazin being one of the rare Istrian municipalites that HDZ had won the 1991 elections in. I'm interested in opinions and perhaps some concrete information about the subject.

There were lot of political influence in Pazin to become an administrative center of Istra county after Croatia became an independent country.

Pula had been the administrative center of Istria since Roman times. Politics had a lot to do with making Pazin the new administrative center.

Pula has a population over 60000, not including the urban area, and Pazin less than 10000 with the whole urban area. I'm generally against the centralization, and had there been any realistic reason why make Pazin administrative center of the county, I would not object. But this is just disguisting, Pula has a long history of being the administrative center of Istria, and victory of political lobbying over history and tradition, and most of all common sense, is just sad.

One other thing... 139 km2???

Maybe this can help: From the end of 13th century to the beginning of the 19th century the central part of Istria was politicaly devided from the rest of Istria. Central part of Istria, or Pazin County, with Pazin as administrative center was first under Counts of Gorizia, and from 1374 under Habsburgs. Rest of Istria was at first devided between Patriarchs of Aquilea and Venice, later completely under Venice. Under Napoleon this two parts joined together after more then 500 Years. And again, the administrative center was not Pula, but Triest, from 1825 to 1865 Pazin, and from 1865 Poreč. Pula became the administrative center of whole Istria for the first time after World war I when Istria fell under Italy. I hope this was helpful

Well, no. If we're talking about history, Pula became a microregional (Istrian peninsula) center in the 1st century BC, after the Romans conquered Istria and the Illyrian capital Nesactium fell. But history aside, demographic status quo of the county clearly shows that there are some other reasons which set Pazin as a regional center. Numbers can be seen if you look at the top of this page. Also, it's an interesting fact that most county officials live and work in Pula and go to Pazin once a month to fulfill the formalities. Another argument is that 2/3rds of county population lives in the south of the peninsula, which indicates that the current situation is clearly a product of politics and lobbying.

All the other counties of Croatia, save the Vukovar-Srijem, have their largest cities as regional centers. It's not centralization when we're talking about such small regions, which brings me to the point that this whole discussion is ridiculous because Istria is a small region. But do not mistake the second part of the last sentence to be apolitical, because political lobbying, capitalism and anglo-imperialism should be fought and abhored wherever found. Viva la revolucion! EDIT: Vukovar-Srijem county's SECOND largest city is the regional center, and the difference in size between Vinkovci, the largest city and Vukovar is less than 5000, while in the case of Pula and Pazin the number jumps as high as 55000, which is almost the number of people in BOTH Vinkovci and Vukovar. Wow.
