  • More than 300,000 Chinese fled Guangzhou for the US sometime between the First Opium War in 1839, the Second Battle of Canton, the Red Turban Rebellion (1854–1856), and a series of clan wars waged by the Punti and Hakka from 1855 to 1867 in which one million people died. Tam’s family was part of this exodus.
