[edit]I added a bunch of details re the point and the controversy over the revetment. I inadvertently deleted TTT's pics of the save the Point bumperstickers. He has put them back. I modified his text slightly. I think it is fairer to say that the stickers are a protest of the original City plan for the revetment rather than the motto of preservationists. Many of those who have Save the Point bumperstickers don't even know what the Illinois Landmarks Preservation Council is.
I think the post reads pretty accurately now. There are a lot of half-truths out there about the Point. We should stick to the facts. peter rossi
Chowbok, made an attempt to clean things up in large part by erasing blocks of text.
- Any discussion of the significance of the point must include a discussion of the save the point bumper stickers and good photos of one on a car and one on something else are important. If you have better such photos feel free to replace mine.
- A discussion of the point should also include a discussion of the Northerly view. If you have ever celebrated Independence Day fireworks at the point you know how important this view is to Point lovers
- It functions in a marketplace to provide an ambiance that is also available at similar places. Make that point.
My text may not have been the best. Revise as you wish, but do not erase these points. TonyTheTiger 19:47, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- I disagree that the photos are necessary, they seem rather tangental. I do agree that the bumper stickers are worth mentioning, and I did mention them. As for the view and the ambience... I agree with you, and I love The Point, but it's hard to work comments like that in while retaining NPOV. If you could find, say, an article in the Tribune or an essay by Studs Terkel or Mike Royko or somebody making those points, then we could work in quotes from there... but we can't just matter-of-factly say "the view is great" in the article. —Chowbok ☠ 19:58, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- It would be fairly neutral to include a photo depicting a view from the most recent movie to be filmed at the Point and allow the reader to draw their own conclusion. It would also be a NPOV statement of fact to describe this as the same view that hundreds come to view the Independence Day Festivities. If the bumper stickers are worth mentioning a photo of them is worth including IMO. You neglected an explanation of its place in the marketplace against Jackson Park and South Shore Cultural Center. - P.S. If you think you have explained the bumper stickers by mentioning them in relation to the most recent political debates, you have not lived in Hyde Park for long enough. Is that view from the Shoreland or the Flamingo? If the Shoreland, you are obviously a shorttimer who has no understanding of the passion held for the point. I have only been in Hyde Park since 9/1/00 and I understand the bumper stickers are more a statement of pride than of political support. TonyTheTiger 20:54, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- P.P.S. Why don't you add your sky view? TonyTheTiger 21:43, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- A movie screen capture is copyrighted. That's still okay to use in some cases, but definitely not here. We certainly can add free images to illustrate the view, but I was concerned this article was getting too image-heavy. It's NPOV that people go there for the Fourth but I don't think it's terribly interesting or relevant. Same with the "marketplace" comment.
- I don't see how relevant it is, but I first moved to Hyde Park in 1995. I live in the Flamingo, I worked for U of C for many years, and I'm a DJ on WHPK. I subscribe to the Herald, I shop at the Co-op, and have breakfast at Salonica. I think I'm as in tune with the community as anybody. If you think the Point controversies section needs to be expanded, go for it. Just remember to keep it neutral. —Chowbok ☠ 22:27, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- P.P.S. Why don't you add your sky view? TonyTheTiger 21:43, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
- Relevance: Quick wikipedia scan results: Coca-Cola and Pepsi articles mention each other. Burger King and McDonald's articles mention each other. Ford and General Motors articles mention each other. Circuit City mentions Best Buy although not the other way. This leads me to believe it is actually an oversight for Best Buy not to mention Circuit City. Thus, it would be abnormal for a Promontory Point article not to mention its competitors. Of course, they should all be listed in some category.
- Since you have been a Hyde Parker for some time you have seen the bumper stickers which predate my 9/1/06 arrival. They may predate you. Is this the case. I view "Save the Point" as more of a motto of those agreeing with the Landmarks and Preservation Council of Illinois than a statement of agreement about any particular proposal.
- I am going to make some changes to your changes please comment on whether they are neutral and relevant. —Preceding unsigned comment added by TonyTheTiger (talk • contribs)

Missing something
[edit]The frequent summer fireworks at Navy Pier provide a view that is especially on Independence Day. Especially what? --Steve (Slf67) talk 04:44, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
