Repton Mass Grave

[edit]

I watched a program this week from three years ago - maybe 2001 - according to YouTube upload date. In it several men, including an English archaeologist are talking with Biddle and -He- said the grave contained 264 individuals. I took it that this did not include the Viking Chieftain or his relative by DNA buried beside him. So the article saying 300 is a bit high. The Anglo-Saxon women in the grave were not mentioned.

The Viking Chieftain I have read was tortured by having his fingers and toes split by an axe before his left femur arm and penis were severed with a great axe blow. Then a penis substitute of a boar's tusk was placed with him in the grave. The torture of the fingers and toes was not mentioned but the severed left femur arm and the substitute boar's tusk were and illustrated. Apparently the Anglo-Saxons were not very good hosts.

An interesting sidenote is the men entered and searched the river/swamp next to the church for Viking artefacts. This is now a stinking swamp filled with leeches. They did find two sharpened iron rods about the size of a crossbow bolt, a thick, large in circumference, iron cauldron rim piece found by magnet, and some sort of much later period lead inkwell before they lost their enthusiasm. (You could not pay me enough money to walk around in a shallow English river. They are full of dangerous trash thrown in over many centuries.) This swamp there was about 3' deep. I see you say that the Trent is now a quarter mile away. According to what I have learned the Viking encampment was between the Abbey and the river nearby. Another part of the Great Army was encamped elsewhere on the river where a metal detectorist reported finding a very large number of artefacts to the local archaeologists. 65.153.54.4 (talk) 03:40, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
