Free image replacement?
[edit]Image:RoboCop.jpg (right) depicts a RoboCop cosplayer at DragonCon 2007. It was uploaded to Flickr under a Creative Commons license, and is currently being used on the Wikipedia page for the 1987 film (RoboCop). As it appears to be a faithful recreation of the character, might it be an acceptable replacement for one of the non-free stills on this page? Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 20:46, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
alex murphy/robocop
[edit]Is robocop still actually Murphy? I don't get whether it is still Murphy or if robocop is a completely different person? In short, does robocop have Murphys memorys and personality?81.153.53.63 (talk) 13:03, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- I would guess yes and no. If RoboCop having Murphy's memorys means that they are the same person, then yes, because he lost all of that when he died. But still RoboCop is not same Alex Murphy who had a wife, son, home and past. In the end of the movie RoboCop asks Lewis what happened to Murphy's family. Some of the viewers may think that he's like a melodramatic circus monkey who talks about himself as a third person. But I see that he's not talking about himself, he's talking about Murphy. -- 88.112.221.171 (talk) 11:10, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Actually that's the very question the first movie is about. I think the film doesn't give an outright answer. 81.182.236.100 (talk) 02:50, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Internal organs
[edit]None of this is mentioned in the movie, just a reference to his "organics" (which may or may not be simply referring to his brain and nervous system), nor was it stated what the liquid actually was. In fact, the production crew have indicated the opposite:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHpe13EPBjI
And the technician in the setup scene states that he has "a" digestive system, with no indication of whether it's a human one. In fact, it being referred to as "simple" would imply that it isn't.
The surgery scene in part 3 depicted the replacement of a mechanical/synthetic heart. (Mitsubishi, Kanemitsu, etc.)
Sookenon (talk) 04:08, 12 February 2011 (UTC)
- @Sookenon In the first movie it is mentioned they managed to save parts of Murphy's digestive system and his left arm in the "building RoboCop" scenes. That youtube link is dead btw.
- It is established his brain and spinal chord are organic, along with at least the skin of his face because of that patched bulet wound in his forehead. The arm was discarded. The organics need to be fed baby food, which Robocop actually eats.
- I think he has at least organic intestines to absorb the nutrients, even if they are close ended, implying robocop doesn't excrete. The whole thing implies a circulatory system and should imply a respiratory one too. That much is depicted in the 2014 remake, but it's a separate movie. 2804:14D:728D:8006:690D:5B7B:B6EC:6E29 (talk) 20:26, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
edit summary here J. Greb
[edit]- Infobox says that Alex Murphy is an alias, it's not, it's his real name.
- Some info in history belonged in other media section.
- Prime Directives and Police File moved to a new section named Features.
- Features section about RoboCop's makeup, what "makes RoboCop, RoboCop".
- I made no changes to weapons section are lead section.
- In other media contained repeating info like
- RoboCop appeared in a
- RoboCop appeared in b
- RoboCop appeared in c
Rather than
- RoboCop appeared in a, b, and c.
I cleaned it up. Read it, and you'll see.
Also removed unnesssicary details, since there is a main article for that.
7. Included popular culture in other media since it's really the same thing. And only one thing. Mr. Simon Green (talk) 19:31, 8 May 2011 (UTC)
- Lets see...
- The character is "RoboCop", and that is the only name appropriate to head the infobox. "Alias" is the closest existing fit for the name of the character who was reanimated as RoboCop. There are other options that you can find in the docs on {{Infobox character}}.
- The "History" section can and should have a serious copyedit done to reduce/remove an over abundance of plot. That said, have it broken up in to "Back story" and the three films isn't a bad thing. This colud also invite material from secondary sources such as critical review of character development and use to be added in the appropriate section.
- "Specs" is a plot and fan free for all. Frankly the directives, weapons, construction, perception, and drawbacks all need to be trimmed in major ways.
- Yes, the IOM needs a trim, though some of what was done didn't help. Again part of this is a need to eliminate plot summaries from what is in the section and keep the proper "See also" or {{main}} pointers.
- IOM and Pop culture are not the same thing. IOM is how the character has been adapted for use in media other than films as a character in stories. Pop culture is when the character is referenced/parodied. Most time Pop culture tends to get lumped under IOM, but in this case the statue Detroit plans isn't adapting the character to tell a story as a statue.

- And two points if this discussion is even viewd by the bold editor:
- There is too much plot/in-story/fan-centric material in the article as is. Tagging the in-story bio for expansion is grossly unneeded. It flouts Wikipedias guidelines on writing about fiction and plot.
- The infobox is headed by the common name. In this case that mirrors the article name. It is also supposed to be light on the obscure in story material. Murphy is borderline, anything else is right out.

Unable to target children
[edit]I'm a bit at odds with this portion under Perception: As seen in RoboCop 2, RoboCop's programming prevents him from targeting children, which allowed Hob to shoot RoboCop and escape the Nuke drug lab. I'm not convinced that it was his programming that stopped him, but more the shock of not only seeing such a young boy in the Nuke lab, but also the possibility that the boy was a co-conspirator of Cain's and being reminded of his own son.

RoboCop possibly doesn't think he's Alex Murphy
[edit]This is speculation, but I think it adds greater depth to the movie's storytelling to have it ambiguous that Robo either thinks he is Alex J. Murphy resurrected or that he took on Murphy's identity to cope with his new reality.
It seems to have been left itentionally ambiguous at the end of RoboCop. Notice that Robo Never refers to himself or is refered to as Officer Alex James Murphy. It's just Murphy. The character even says that Alex Murphy is dead in Rogue City. A line also said in Robocop before the cyborg regains his humanity. There is a scene in the game where Robo sees himself in a reflection as fully human. So we don't know if Robocop is Alex Murphy because Robo doesn't know either.
I just think it's a nice detail. Cyborg of Theseus kind of situation.
I suggest editing the summary paragraph to reflect this ambiguity rather than flat out saying he is Robocop. 2804:14D:728D:8006:690D:5B7B:B6EC:6E29 (talk) 20:01, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
