Privateer[edit]

Records in St. Augustine indicate that Jose Sanchez de Ortigosa was a corsair not a privateer. Functionally he was a private contractor patrolling the waters around Florida in the same way as the US Coast Guard does today except for payment he confiscated loot, ships, crew, captain and passengers. He did this for a relatively short period of time, retired wealthy and took up ranching. His son Francisco X Sanchez de Ortigosa was one of the wealthiest businessmen in the early history of Spanish Florida owning multiple ranches and other businesses and supplied beef and other supplies to the British during the revolution. The actual house built by Francisco X Sanchez over 200 years ago survives in the old quarter. I'm not sure why a "replica" of the house my ancestor built would warrant a Wikipedia article. His son was more interesting and more historically significant being the head of one of the very few Spanish families who remained in Florida during the British period. Most who can prove descent from the early St. Augustine FL can do so because of Francisco's decision to remain behind while virtually the rest of the entire colony fled to Cuba, or Spain or other Spanish held places. Don Jose Sanchez de Ortigosa is the common ancestor to most Floridanos living in Florida today including me.

Unfortunately most of the preceding paragraph is the result of original research and some is not relevant to the article which is why I placed it here. If anyone knows of a wiki acceptable source for the above I would be much obliged if they could add the relevant parts to the article.

It's funny there is an article about a replica of a house that once stood in St. Augustine but there is no article about the man whose name that house bears.
