this is a mess, the same source claiming he died in 658 also has him appointed by Dagobert II, who reigned in the 670s. Perhaps this is just a misprint, and it should be 678. But German sources unequivocally have him dying in 618, and there are thirteen bishops of Strasbourg between Arbogast and Witgern, who was appointed in 728. So the 658 date being a misprint doesn't really matter too much, as we still have a much worse discrepancy of 60 years between sources.

Also, where is it supposed to be recorded that his Gaelic name was Arascach? This information seems to be absolutely limited to the article by Grattan-Flood (CathEnc 1907). Perhaps this is just an idle conjecture (if he was called Arbogast, what might have been his Irish name? That's rather different from claiming with confidence that his given name was, in fact, Arascach). --dab (𒁳) 09:08, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

turns out even less is known, the only thing we have is he was a 7th-century bishop of Strasbourg. Not even his Irish origin is clear, some sources say he was from Aquitania. There is a 10th-century vita which can be summarized for what it is worth. This seems to place him as a contemporary of Dagobert II, but some people seem to think he lived much earlier, c. 550 to 618, apparently according to archaeological evidence (presumably of his remains or tomb). --dab (𒁳) 20:17, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
