252 feet high steeple?
[edit]Very dubious number. No reference. This would be taller than many skyscrapers. Judging from photo, actual height is probably less than half this.Bill Whittaker (talk) 15:33, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
I think I figured it out. Dubuque had it own topograpical elevation datum- many large towns did, including Des Moines- and this is where 252 feet came from. For example, http://www.cityofdubuque.org/index.aspx?NID=538 , the elevation of the W 3rd St. reservoir is listed as 230 foot, even though the USGS elevation is more than 600 feet. Probably in early planning documents the Dubuque topographical elevation of structures was listed; and at one time someone misread the topograhical elevation of St Mary's as the elevation (height) of the building.
I will wait a few days to see if anyone has any comments and then change the article, removing the 252 foot reference. Bill Whittaker (talk) 14:30, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
