Centrifugal governor?

[edit]

As far as I know and as far as I can tell from the information (it's in German) the clutch is engaged when you touch the stick. // Liftarn

The VW Beetle never used a Saxomat as described. The VW semi-automatic transmission (called an Auto-Stick) that was optional on some Beetles used a servo clutch and a torque convertor, as with the Hydrak system as described in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.200.71.92 (talk) 12:30, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As a former driver of my Dad's Auto Union 1000, I can confirm the Saxomat clutch is "engaged" (if by that you mean disengaging the clutch) when one moves the shift lever more than a few tenths of a millimeter (depending on the switch adjustment of course). The process of shifting gears was as follows: one released the gas pedal, shifted gears and re-applied pressure to the gas pedal. With much practice, it could be done very quickly without any clashing, crashing or other ill-effects. The servo was out of adjustment when we bought it (which may be why the original owner gave it up) but Dad was able to obtain one of the rare English versions of the actual OEM shop manual (complete with hand-notations by a factory-trained DKW mechanic) from a garage that was closing in New Jersey! We pored over that manual until we figured out how to set the servo. It never gave us another problem. We lost that beauty one hot day when (at least) one of the pistons seized. I held on to the manuals and spare parts until 1972 when Hurricane Agnes blew through town and everything was turned to mush and rust when our basement was filled with 6 feet of water. I loved that car. I'd buy another in a heart beat if I could afford to take care of it properly. JimScott (talk) 21:47, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
