Replacing Sentinels[edit]

With sentinels, a program may required transferring dirty bedding to a cage containing sentinel animals, and periodically, one sentinel animal would be sent to CRL for euthanasia and pathogen screening. This system periodically sacrifices one or more 'sentinel' animals to screen for pathogens. An alternative sentinel program might collect feces from cages containing experimental animals, then submit them for PCR testing of pathogens. This protocol no longer needs sentinel animals and decreases animal use generally and also decreases the amount of labor and caging costs. MaynardClark (talk) 17:19, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
