Updating

[edit]

Whereas the taxo box mentioned 4 genera, the article said there were only 3 (Smilodon + 2 others), which agreed with the only reference (paleobiology database). I found an article published in 2013 concerning the new genus, Rhizosmilodon, and so added a citation to its mention in the taxobox (I don't think I used the correct format) and then corrected the article.

However, a quick read of the recently published paper indicated that the various wikipedia articles on the machairodontinae may need some serious updating (I suppose it depends on how authoritative one considers this paper in comparison to early publications):

  • Megantereon is considered to have only 2 species
  • Rhizosmilodon is indicated to be the earliest genus in Smilodontini
  • Paramachairodus, which has had its spelling corrected to Paramachaerodus, is an earlier machairodont than Smilodontini/Homotherini/Machairodontini (no idea if it is still considered a member of Eumachairodontia). Following a revision of the genus in 2010, the species P. ogygia has been renamed Promegantereon ogygia; however, the genus has gained a new 2nd species, P. maximilliani.

While I would be prepared to undertake this revision, as a layman, I feel it would be better handled by someone with at least an undergraduate education in the subject. Perhaps AshleyEN might be interested?Glevum (talk) 23:26, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
