citations?

[edit]

Since when do we require citations for names in other languages, especially when indigenous? I'll get you guys one, but if this becomes custom, I can run around and put a citation-tag on about 100,000 articles. I cannot find anything about this in WP:MOS or naming conventions. Same time as we require citations for anything else. Nyttend (talk) 21:51, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RfC: Do names in local/indigenous languages need a source/citation?

[edit]

There seems to be an interesting precedent at St. Johns, Arizona where someone has tagged the Navajo name of the town that was given with a "citation needed"-tag.

I am bringing this up for RfC since this could mean that possibly thousands of articles will have to be tagged in this way, and that every local/alternative name in wikipedia will require a citation for every language or else needs to be removed. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 21:52, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My view is that unless they're contested (for example in the case of variant spellings) they shouldn't need one. I've added one and shifted the Fact tag to the English name, as it's not ref'd either. A "pointed" tag perhaps but equally justifiable if the feeling is the Navajo name requires a ref. Akerbeltz (talk) 13:39, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm with Akerbeltz on this one. Otherwise we might have to tag every ENGLISH name as well. Who's to say it's "St Johns" and not "Saint John's" or even "Sinjuns"?--MacRusgail (talk) 15:14, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
My point precisely. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 16:36, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We have sources here: the GR2 and the GR1 source both are for this community. Shall we tag the title of every community article with a {{fact}}, since we only have citations for its name in the infobox, in the geography section, and in the demographics section, but leave an unreferenced other-language name without a citation? Moreover, let's say I decide to write an article, using reliable English-language sources only, on a small community in Bangladesh. Without a citation, how can we trust that the name that I give is the actual name in Bengali? Nyttend (talk) 18:05, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Your to-do list:
I'll bring you more once you're done. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 18:37, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have more important things to work on; but there's no good reason for me not to tag these if I want to. Nyttend (talk) 19:29, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I neither me nor Choyoołʼįįhí are seriously suggesting that it would be worth our time to ref every last placename on Wikipedia. The (constructive) point here is that there's a certain assumption of truthfulness in a fair share of Wikipedia content and placenames are part of that. If it is not worth your while reffing every US placename, then it's not entirely reasonable to expect us to ref every last indigenous name either now, is it? I would suggest that a modus operandi whereby we ref those that are likely to be contentious or are queried with good reason, but not (retrospectively anyway) all current ones. Akerbeltz (talk) 23:13, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean "not worth your while..."? I've never said anything like that; but I do expect all US placenames to be referenced. Nyttend (talk) 00:52, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You said "I have more important things to do"... so you expect every US placename from NYC to Rome, Ohio to be reffed? Akerbeltz (talk) 11:36, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. That's why we have {{GR}} and {{gnis}} that reference the vast majority of these names already. Nyttend (talk) 13:10, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I suppose I can't argue with that :) Akerbeltz (talk) 15:14, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
