Titles of articles on Churches

[edit]

Amitchell125 has recently renamed the following articles on churches with the edit summaries Full name and place will bring it in line with similar structures. I think these changes are undesirable.

Wikipedia's policy is described in Wikipedia:Article titles. The titles without placenames meet the Precision and Conciseness criteria of the policy, although I accept that Consistency is also a criterion. There is no subject-specific convention in Category:Wikipedia naming conventions.

A place name is usually only appended to an article title if it is needed for Disambiguation. A placename is not given if it is the only church of this name with a Wikipedia article, or if it is the most notable church of this name. For example, the following articles do not specify a place name.

Some of these are high-profile articles that will have been worked on by several editors, so it is reasonable to use them as models. Your comments please. Verbcatcher (talk) 18:15, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to have my changes reverted, but I altered the titles to allow consistency within [[Category:Standing Anglo-Saxon churches]], where the geographical locations - and not the saints' names, for instance - are listed alphabetically. I think this should be taken into consideration. Amitchell125 18:31, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
There are other ways to control sorting within categories, see WP:SORTKEY. You could set a default sort key using {{DEFAULTSORT}}, but in this case [[Category:Standing Anglo-Saxon churches|Cambridge]] should ensure the desired order, see Help:Category#Sorting category pages.  Done I have reverted the page moves. Looking at Category:Standing Anglo-Saxon churches, I notice that the places where these churches are are not specified in the category listing, although they are sorted by place name. This may be the issue you were referring to, and if so I agree that it looks odd. This could be resolved by moving the category declarations to the redirect pages that have the place names. However, this could be confusing and it may be against the manual of style. Verbcatcher (talk) 00:15, 23 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
