Influences
[edit]Hey, I'm watching Starship Operators right now and I spotted these obvious influences, so I decided to put them here. But, I'm portuguese and so the text may be a little weird and uncomprehensive, altough I think the main points are there. If anyone cares to do a better "version", I would be very glad. Maybe I'll add new stuff later, if there's anything interesting to put. ShinjiPG 09:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
- Finding an anime or SSO site spotting them is one thing, posting stuff you deduced yourself is another (AKA original research). It'll be really good if you can find some references to such material. Magus Melchior 06:34, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- It is original research, I will delete that part right now. MythSearcher 05:37, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Hum, what proves me that what I find in another site is the truth and not just speculation? Maybe this kind of subject, such as Influences, can only be spotted by viewers. They wouldn't advertise "Buy Starship Operators, the anime that copies 2001 A Space Odyssey", I guess. You should really watch both Starship Operators and Kubrick's 2001, cause the similarities slap you in the face. ShinjiPG 17:31, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- You need to have a reliable source to prove it is not just fan speculation. MythSearchertalk 03:10, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
- One of the superior officers of the Alliance/Kingdom does seem to be a sort of hommage to Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. Compare the scar and the facial structure :) May be a conicidence, since such character looks simply suits best (and there is a sort of limit in anime character generation I guess). The character I am talking about can be seen throughout several scenes in the 4 vs 2 fleet battle episode. Sorry for budding in... and daaaaamn I need to get my password ;p 87.160.245.116 20:44, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
- Same goes for yours, too. MythSearchertalk 03:10, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Starship Name
[edit]There are two possible romanizations of アマテラス: Amateras (based on ship displays in the anime and possibly elsewhere), or Amaterasu. Both are used in the article, but I think we should stick with one and put a note that fansubs have called it the other (a la Raising Heart vs. Raging Heart in Nanoha). What does the English cast call the ship?
- Also, we might want to clean up the list of starships and associated data, or at least restructure it. Magus Melchior 08:10, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah. That and also the characters list, which is way too long. ShinjiPG 17:41, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- The anime uses Amateras - it can be seen on some maps and such.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 05:47, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
Episodes
[edit]Eh, someone completely replaced all that I had written about each episode. That person could have at least pointed that out, I guess. ShinjiPG 17:32, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Since the last three episode titles use another romaji "conversion", and also because that's the one used throughout Wikipedia, I'll change the first ones too. And I'll try to upload the rest of the pictures later, so the list is complete. ShinjiPG 17:49, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh. Sorry, they were either a bit long or confusing. I kinda went a little overboard with WP:BOLD there. Magus Melchior 00:22, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- Lol, yeah, you were correct to change them since they probably had gramatical/orthographic errors. I'm only saying you could have at least pointed that out in this Talk page or something, since I did put some effort to write those summaries :P I guess I'll have to get used to this. Independent federation?
[edit]Ummm, having just rewatched the series, I got the impression there was no Independent Federation, just various independent planets that the Kingdom was swallowing one by one...? -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 05:48, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- There is a Federation that over-rule most of the countries in that galaxy(It acts kinda like UN in real life, but with actual power, military wise and political wise.). The Empire seems to be one of the larger countries that opposes the Fed and have a military that can actually stand against it if the Fed does not care to take any military action.(Which obviously the Fed does not really care about the small countries as well.) MythSearchertalk 15:53, 16 April 2007 (UTC)
- That would be Earth Federation, which I think is different from the United Nations (which still exists as shown in the series). I am afraid I don't follow the rest of your comment. What I meant was that planet-states like Planetary Nation of Kibi, Planetary Nation of Shu or Palmia (the article doesn't mention the state name) were independent and not allied to any faction. The Amaterasu was also not escaping to any 'Henrietta Independent Federation' for protection - it was just escaping, and trying to get Earth Federation to recognize it as a government in exile. Places like Shu or Palmia it visited on the way were more like neutral ports that allowed it to dock, rather than any allied powers (and certainly not a single 'power').-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 21:38, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- That is why I say the Fed acts kinda like UN. UN recognizes nations as independent, not uniting them as one nation or making them allies. The only different is that the Fed actually got military power to enforce the independecy of nations it recognizes as independent. All the ports they parked at are similar, they are independent, just allied with Kibi against the Empire.
- Think of it in terms of real life countries, for example, if US is an Empire and keep invading other countries, forcing them to surrender and become vassals of the US, and one day captured Monaco, the governor of Monaco escaped and a cruiser brought him around and asked UN to support its indenpendency and help retrieve their land. The cruiser went to Iran, and Iran supported them as an ally. Later it went to UK, and UK supported them as an ally. Somehow at the end the Forces of UN(think of them as not US soldiers) protected the cruiser and enforced the independency of Monaco. All of the countries said here have independency, and is enforced by UN. MythSearchertalk 06:09, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

- One thing to keep in mind is that reference to Henrietta Independent Federation is probably from the manga work. Not from anime. There are few things mentioned in the anime as a sidenote that appears in Manga as major story element. However, I do not recall Henrietta Independent Federation being mentioned anywhere in the anime. If the main entry for Starship Operators should contain only anime canon, then there should be separate entry for the manga. Manga has substantially different feel to it, it panders more to shonen crowd, with less emphasis on realism as anime has attempted to do so.--Dchem 11:07, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Connections with Honorverse
[edit]I am not adding this to article without any refs (per OR) but... the universe and the plot has a lot of in common with Honorverse. Honor has been translated to Japanese, and although it may not have been translated, the The Shadow of Saganami was released in 2004 - a year before the series was made, so it could have certainly been read by and influenced Ryo Mizuno (wonder if there are any interviews of him on Japanese web, and if anybody asked him about that...). Alliance of Planetary Nations is a lot like People's Republic of Haven, Earth Federation is a lot like Solarian League, and Henrietta's Galaxy independent nations resemble the Talbott Cluster worlds... plus, of course, we have a brilliant female tactician, lots of small battles, realtivly Newtonian/realistic ones, not cinematograophic, too, deaths among the crew... -- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 21:45, 17 April 2007 (UTC)
- The original novel of Starship Operators was published on March, 2001(Amazon link), the magazine serial was much earlier in the year 1999 or 98. Starship Operators follows a traditional Japanese storyline(main characters work up their way by bravery, will power and hardship.), followed with nice looking female operators which most recent anime uses. Hmmm, the similarity to any other series is obvious, because these kind of political structure is seen in every other space opera, the characters are all just generic positions that appeared in most Japanese sci-fi anime, manga, games positions. Novels
[edit]How far do the novels continue the story? Is the series still ongoing? We need publication dates, ISBN and titles of the novels. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 22:45, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
