Copyvio?

[edit]

According to the article's history, the library's director contibuted most of the material for this article. Which means the apparent copy and paste [1] from the library's website may not be as much of a problem. But still may be copyvio and in need of permission to use and/or paraphrasing. I'm not an expert, so if anyone else wants to take a look, that would be great. Also, I'm all for libraries, but the current article reads like an ad. I just sent Jscheppke a note about it. Yes, I am indeed the director of the Oregon State Library since 1991. There are no copyvios here because we are a state agency and everything we do is a public record in the public domain (including the photo which was taken by a state employee on state time using a state camera). Yes, I did cut and paste a bit from our website. Our mission is our mission (word for word). Some of the rest could be rephrased, I suppose. Sorry if it seems boosterish. I have an obvious bias about the Oregon State Library that's hard to set aside. I'm a fan of Wikipedia, and I just wanted to get an article going about my library. I noticed there were not many articles about state libraries. Every state has one, and they serve an important purpose. But they are often little-known. This was a fun little project when I was holed up in my air conditioning on a very hot summer weekend! -- Jim Scheppke
Thanks for your reply. I might not speak for all Wikipedians, but considering the subject (since it's not, say, an article about a band you are in or something), even if the article is boosterish, it's better than no article at all. At some point it will get edited, and we will welcome your input. Katr67 16:01, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can we do anything about the white space at the top and can the image be put in the infobox? Katr67 07:26, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See if that is better for the white space. We could put the picture there, but the infobox is designed for logos and has some sort of default size that I could never figure out how to override. So the picture would be there, but at something like 150px size. Not to mention I think the picture probably is a copyvio as I don't think the library director was correct on the government employee part applying to state of Oregon employees/agencies. I've searched through the ORS and cannot find anywhere where it says one way or the other. Time to try the AG office and look for an advisory note and send an email if I can't find anything. Yeah, it looks a lot better. As for the image, I prefer the approach of sticking my fingers in my ears and going lalalalala and hoping the copyright gnomes don't notice it. Of course I could just walk a couple blocks and snap a picture of it myself, I suppose. Katr67 21:27, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the DOJ site it looks like state work is not in the public domain. So I think will remove the picture (I have some from inside and out) and I know there are others, such as the Senate chambers pic from the Blue Book, that will need to be pulled unless Pete's letter works. I did send an email to good ol Hardy Meyers, but I'm guessing a reply will be weeks away if at all. Aboutmovies 21:52, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, take a look at the pics and see which ones you prefer. Then remove the gallery. Aboutmovies 22:22, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm torn between the card catalog shot and the building facade, though that one's a bit murky... Katr67 20:19, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

White space solved, sort of. The white space is due to the infobox, and can be eliminated by fully filling out the infobox. I coudld probably edit the template, but it looks rather complicated and not worth the effort. So if you find any additional info for the empty fields please fill them in.
