"Shitposting"

User:Spicy, I started this discussion because of your recent edit, removing the description of "shitposter" from Matty Roberts. I understand your argument that it is unencyclopedic, and it would be, if it was a judgement I made for him. It wasn't. Roberts referred [to himself as a shitposter], and [[1]] [[2]] make reference to his Facebook group that created the event, "Shitposting cause I'm in shambles". Because of these facts, i described him as a shitposter, and if people are unaware of what that term means, then they can click on it, as I had also linked it to the Shitposting article. I'm aware that it's used in the sources, but it's still a slang term, not formal encyclopedic language - it's akin to describing him as a "dank memer" or some such. If it's necessary to specify what he does in the lead we could say something like "Matty Roberts, who runs a Facebook meme group"... at least, if "shitposting" is to be mentioned in the lead, it should be mentioned and sourced in the body of the article, which it currently isn't. That's not too hard to fix, just adding one of these sources to the Facebook meme section. If i do that, would you be fine with the mention of shitposting within the lead? RobotGoggles (talk) 21:16, 13 June 2021 (UTC)

I'm still not really thrilled with the way we're calling him a "shitposter" without context in the lead. The lead should be as accessible as possible to a broad audience - we should not be using terms that readers need to click on a link to understand if it's at all avoidable, particularly if the terms in question are informal internet slang. There's also the issue that none of the sources (as far as I've seen) actually call him a "shitposter", they all say that he enjoys shitposting or runs a Facebook group about shitposting or something along those lines, but never just "Matty Roberts, a shitposter"... "shitposter" is not really a defining profession like "politician" or "activist" or what have you. It seems fair to mention shitposting in the body of the article, where the term can be explained and placed in a proper context, but I don't think the "shitposter" bit is necessary in the lead. Maybe the sentence can be rephrased to something like "On June 27, 2019, Matty Roberts, moderator of the Facebook group "Shitposting cause I'm in shambles", asked Facebook users to band together..." Shitposting is not a profession, that's true, but i want to specify that the event itself was a shitpost. I understand that most readers would be unaware of what a shitpost is, but I don't think that makes it poor form for the lead. In most articles about scientific subjects, the leads have terms that must be clicked on to understand. In this case, i think the term Shitpost is particularly important, as it attained mainstream attention as a shitpost. Perhaps we could refer to the event as a whole as a shitpost and not direct "shitposter" as a title to Roberts? RobotGoggles (talk) 01:42, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Fair use image in Gathering section?

I feel like we should have a picture of the people who gathered at the gates. There probably ain't any free images of it out there (correct me if I'm wrong🙂), but I think a fair use image would comply with WP:NFCC#8 - the section looks really bland now.

I disagree. A relative handful of people gathered in the desert. Any decent writer can summarize what the sources say about the gathering in prose. Why would a free encyclopedia use a non-free image for such a trivial gathering? We certainly can't appropriate a newspaper's photos. No way. Cullen³²⁸ Let's discuss it 06:55, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Rollover
