Fantastic Article, great to see! Good work!

Glad you like it! Grutness...wha? 6 July 2005 10:45 (UTC) (in St. Clair)

No Glenleith? I'd be happy to write about it but I know bugger all to be honest Graphia 09:35, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Good point - we seem to have missed that one. I'll add something small for that and Woodhaugh - expand it as you see fit! Grutness...wha? 00:34, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Image needs replacement[edit]

Hello all...

An image used in the article, specifically Image:From roslyn over bridge.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

You have your mission, take your camera and start clicking.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 00:34, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just happened to be in Roslyn today, so... done :) Grutness...wha? 03:59, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inner / Outer Definitions[edit]

How is this defined?

I would be inclined to think that Wakari is part of the "inner" city, not outer as it is currently grouped with Halfway Bush. Kennedy (talk) 10:06, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RThe few books I've seen which define the difference use the inner ridge of hills as the dividing point, from the top of Forbury Hill close to St Clair golf course, across Calton Hill and Lookout Point, then along the ridge to Roslyn and Maori Hill. By that definition, everything in and beyond the Kaikorai Valley is outer, including Brockville, Halfway Bush, and Wakari. I'd agree that it's fairly arbitrary, though. I think that the definition should be modified, technically all the way out to Middlemarch is still part of "Dunedin". The only "outer" suburbs I would have are Brighton, Halfway Bush, and the suburbs along the peninsula on both sides. Maybe places like Pine Hill and Glenleith as well. What do you think? Kennedy (talk) 19:45, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
An authorative source could help, along the lines of "urban area" and "territorial outside urban" maybe clearer to define. LINZ Place Names Database has:
Urban satellites: Port Chalmers, Mosgiel, Macandrew Bay
Suburbs: Wakari, St Leonards, Halfway Bush
Populated place: Brighton, Middlemarch
I propose slight reogranisation per LINZ, urban area suburbs and outlying in the terriorial authority area. XLerate (talk) 22:37, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Probably a good idea. Though places like Middlemarch and Brighton are technically part of Dunedin, virtually no-one would consider calling them "suburbs" in general conversation (in fact, several articles, such as Mosgiel, make just this point). In any case, I can foresee a point not that long from now when this article is split up a bit - I've considered starting separate articles for one or two of the places on this page (e.g., St. kilda) before now, and there's certainly enough information for them.
