March 17, 1968: The Sunday Times announces the Golden Globe Race around the world.

June 1, 1968: British army captain John Ridgway sails in English Rose IV.

June 8, 1968: British army sergeant Chay Blyth sails in Dytiscus III.

June 14, 1968: British merchant marine officer Robin Knox-Johnston sails in Suhaili.

July 21, 1968: Ridgway retires, in Recife, Brazil.

August 15, 1968: Blyth technically disqualifies himself, in Tristan da Cunha.

August 22, 1968: French sailor/author Bernard Moitessier sails in Joshua; French businessman Loïck Fougeron sails in Captain Browne.

August 24, 1968: British naval officer Bill King sails in Galway Blazer II.

September 13, 1968: Blyth retires in East London, South Africa.

September 16, 1968: British naval officer Nigel Tetley sails in Victress.
