McCaughey[edit]

Alleged Sweet Jane similarity[edit]

I deleted something along the lines of "Despite the acclaim REM have gained for this song, the main riff bears a remarkable similarity to "Sweet Jane" by the Velvet Underground. This is basically accusing REM of plagiarizing Sweet Jane and saying they don't deserve the acclaim they're getting.

If you look closely, you'll see the "source" that was cited, an article from Prefix magazine, actually made no such accusations. Instead, the "Sweet Jane" claim comes from a user who made a comment on the article. I'm pretty sure blog comments made by just anyone don't count as reliable sources; correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I'm only familiar with the cover version of "Sweet Jane" (by Cowboy Junkies) which is much more well-known; however I would guess it used more or less the same riff as the original. And while the main riffs of Sweet Jane and SNSS bear a superficial similarity, they're not the same: the rhythm is identical but the chord progressions are different.

Anyway, these riffs are both so simple that there are probably hundreds of other songs that use them, as well. Just one example: "Do Ya" by the Electric Light Orchestra. Its main riff is a lot closer to SNSS than Sweet Jane's is. That doesn't mean that REM plagiarized ELO anymore than they plagiarized Velvet Underground or Cowboy Junkies.

Please don't re-add this POV (and potentially libelous) accusation without adding a good source. By good I mean an actual news article, not a user comment on a news article. Stonemason89 (talk) 10:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Better source found. The song follows the same basic chord progression D A G A with minor differences. In the world of music the use of similar riffs is not necessarily 'libellous'. However, this issue has been brought up by many p.s. If you are looking for the best cover version of "Sweet Jane" find the one by Mott the Hoople, who also throw a B minor into the main riff to mix things up if I remember correctly.--AlbertW (talk) 01:15, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems like you are contradicting WP:V. When we have a reliable source that states "x", then we follow what those sources say. If we have a reliable source stating that the song has a certain genre, then it really doesn't make sense to keep it in the body of the article, but remove a category.
