This discussion of tamping is coffee-specific, although the word has a larger definition. I believe this should be folded into a discussion of coffee equipment, and the word should be moved to wiktionary.

I agree. I came to the page looking for information on gravel tampers for laying beds for paving stones. Kjl 21:57, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Also agree. Tamp can mean to compress anything in a fashion similar to that described here for espresso. Perhaps "Tamp (coffee)" or "(espresso)". Or just fold it. Jodine Sparks 13:02, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. One can tamp a cigarette, for example. It's the only word that describes that packing action.

I de-coffeed the article. Sorry for removing the coffee specific information, but that should probably be put into a coffee-preparation or the espresso page. Kjl 15:29, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some of the discussion here revolves around things used to "tamp" with, so I linked the word "tamper" to the existing wikipedia doc of the same name (which describes tools used for tamping, so they don't have to be mentioned here on the "tamp" page which could cause the scope of this page to drift). It looks like there's a guy advertising coffee tamps on this page. "Has emerged as the leader of the pack in coffee tamping." I don't know if that's a 'biased' statement or not. -- Someone's unsigned comment

Not only that, but the "coffe text" is a coffeevio -- oops, I mean copyvio (see edit history) -- I removed it. Descriptions of the role of tamping in various activities (coffee preparation, road building) belong in articles on those topics, not here. Honestly I'm not sure that this topic deserves more than Wiktionary entry. Meanwhile, I removed the reference to Phineas Gage, much as it breaks my heart. If we leave him in here, then he'd also have to be in the articles on explosives, railroad construction, and a score of other places. EEng (talk) 22:57, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So are "tamp" and "tamper" always interchangable? If so the article should start "A tamp or tamper ...". Now the usage is a bit confusing. 141.16.91.106 (talk) 14:14, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

13 years later, this has been fixed. :) That said, there is a lot of common usage that conflates the verbs and nouns on this in different ways. Lonny (LRG) (talk) 18:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tamp vs Tamper

[edit]

Isn't the device a tamper and the act is to tamp? If so, can I fix this article? Lonny (LRG) (talk) 05:21, 30 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and made the change and moved the page Tamp to Tamper (tool). Lonny (LRG) (talk) 18:32, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Expanding Upon Construction Tampers

[edit]

Because there are a variety of tampers used in construction, this page could benefit from expanding on that category. I plan to add information on plate tamps and jumping jacks, what distinguishes them, and what they may be used for. I believe "Tampers in Construction" will fit best as a subheading under the "Examples" heading. Hvanv6420 (talk) 16:52, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. You can add this information, but remember to add a reliable source that supports the information you have added. QuicoleJR (talk) 16:59, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
