Question not currently answered: How is the taxonomic order derived from the phylogenetic tree? For example, what if two taxa appear to have branched off at the same time? Or if there are multiple competing versions of the tree? -- Visviva 14:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A method is described for angiosperms in APWeb: branches of the tree are swapped to form a maximally 'comb-like' structure which means that at each node the branch with least nodes is to the left. Then reading along the top of the tree gives a linear order. But I don't know if this is a general method which is written up somewhere or whether it's specific to APweb, so it's not easy to add to the article.
