i might transfer this to the article so as to finish off the plot: "The military kills one of Elias’s sons and before he is shot by the firing squad, the priest plants a seed of suspicion that he had insulted God with his selfishness. The seed grows in Elijas and turns into an incredibly strong belief that he is damned and that God would punish him by taking the lives of his children.

Elijas creates a superstition system in which he raises his children, far from civilisation. He holds his youngest son, Aureliano, whose mother died at birth, locked up in the house and does not let the other children touch him. Aureliano spends his days painting religious images of elements from the family’s life as if they were parts of the way of the cross. (We liked the overlapping of scenes from real life in Aureliano’s drawings and vice-versa). During that time the father and his other children build a church, convinced that God would forgive him. Years go by, the children die one after the other. But not as a result of God’s punishment, but as a result of Elijas’s misconception. There is incest, the tearing down of the church in which more than a decade was invested, imprisoning of children and of course, death. When Aureliano returns home after an attempted flight during which he buried his sister, he finds a cemetery in which his father already prepared a cross with his name on it.

Elijas was so blind to the world that he became a selfish person who aspires to clear his own conscious, justifying his actions with his fear for the fate of his children, while at the same time, he destroys their lives. Aureliano understands that when he finds the cross. Holding the cross in his hands and anger in his heart, he looks for his father. He finds him hanged in the church that brought him no pardon.
