citations

[edit]

Cathy O'Neil appears several times in this documentary (had to look on IMDB to get her details, I wanted to track down her book) [1]

Cite 32 ([2]) is being used misleadingly. Merely saying "Ashley Boyd and Audrey Hingle note the film's lack of "insights from women and people of color who have been important voices on these topics." makes it sound like Boyd and Hingle disagree with the film, but they open with "Building a movement of internet users who understand social media’s impact and who demand better from platforms is the only way we’ll bring about the fundamental change we seek. The making, release and popularity of The Social Dilemma represents a major milestone towards this goal." Changing to something more honest. Mooseburger42 (talk) 22:38, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Allegedly "promotional" section

[edit]

The "Critical response" section is currently tagged as promotional. However, most of the statements are well-sourced. Can Cpotisch please explain why they added the tag? I'd like to hear their opinion. Thanks! --Firestar464 (talk) 05:05, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Same question here. Zantilo (talk) 16:17, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't call the content promotional, but it definitely has style issues in my opinion. Looking at any other critical response section on Wikipedia will show that this one is way too wordy and generally an outlier. 64.203.244.11 (talk) 18:36, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I also feel the "Reception" section does not have a promotional tone. The feedback provided is equal in both positive and negative reviews from critics and analyzers, therefore leading to more of a neutral tone. Aisg05 (talk) 21:49, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of New Subsections

[edit]

In order to contextualize the underdeveloped "Scientific Basis" section of this article, I wish to initiate the additions of Subsections: "Targeted Advertising" and "User Generated Content".

" Targeted Advertising

One of the main topics focused on in the film is the concept of Targeted advertising. Interviewees note the suspected selling of personal information of users by social media platforms, but emphasize that what is really being sold is the attention span of the users. Targeted Advertising uses information such as "prior search, browsing behavior, geographic and demographic information,". While the specifics of the algorithms behind targeted advertisements are generally kept private, studies have shown that the suggested advertisements are based on key words found in profile status updates or used in searches.

User Generated Content

User Generated Content (UGC) is one form of information that is commonly shared through social media platforms. UCG differs from adverts because it is publicly available information created by independent individuals. This information is typically not professionally created and is not funded by official companies. UGC is commonly linked with fake news.

Regarding the "Background/Impact of Social Media Section"

[edit]

I marked this as written like an essay because it appears to be mostly a user's opinion on the effects of social media (though with sources) without contributing much to the article. 64.203.244.11 (talk) 18:34, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and just deleted the section altogether shortly after this, I found it to be in pretty bad condition and in clear violation of original research. 64.203.244.11 (talk) 14:00, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Critical Response subsection

[edit]

I marked this as not matching Wikipedia's tone for being overlong and generally not reflective of how other articles' critical response sections look. 64.203.244.11 (talk) 18:35, 19 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

missing Interviewees

[edit]

the list of interviews is not complete: e.g. Chamath Palihapitiya, Sean Parker are missing, might be some others. Also very enlightening the quote from Edward Tufte: "There are only two industries that call their customers ´users´: illegal drugs and software." Ai24 (talk) 11:10, 25 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
