[edit]I think you could add maybe another sub heading about the village subway today and talk about how the fresh market is going to use it there. That part of the history section kind of blends in and could be used separately. However you would obviously need to have enough information about the village subway today to be able to post a new section so it is understandable if that is not possible. The thorough amount of history you have is very good along with the vast amount of information on the artists. The tone is neutral and the sources seem reliable. You could maybe add a map of the village subway to the page, or a map of Cameron Village to show where it is located. That would be interesting since I cant think of a reason to add a table. This page seems to look like a well established Wikipedia page. I would suggest not having as much information about the particular artists that the venue hosted. Instead, I would focus on the types of music and nightlife that The Village Subway offered and go into detail about each different venue that was located at The Village Subway. Another important element of a Wikipedia page is an image. The Village Subway should have some sort of picture or image to add a visual element to the page. Overall, this page has a good amount of information about the history of The Village Subway. It could incorporate some modern takes on Cameron Village and what it's doing now.

[edit]The article is good! I would say that for the artists section, you should add more popular bands! I know I heard about some big time artists that played there from my parents! Add more about what happened when it was shut down...With so many people interested in the Rock scene, the business had to go elsewhere. So maybe add in a hook to another local rock venue (i.e. "with the closing of the village subway, the rock scene had to relocate to 'Lincoln Theatre' or wherever it located to.) Talk about what's going on with the village subway today and the recent buzz around Raleigh lately about the underground. Later, pictures would be great too! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Melizabethi123 (talk • contribs) 17:00, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
This feedback concerns the article generally, but is intended in particular for students in COM 257 at NCSU during the spring 2014 semester. It is based on this version from 21 March 2014. The problems and suggestions below will cover many aspects of the page including but not limited to writing quality, spelling and grammar, tone, number and quality of sources, extent of source use or misuse, citation style, formatting, layout, wikimarkup errors, stylistic issues, media use, and organization. Some will be straightforward while others will be more general or may require you to do some research into Wikipedia policies and guidelines for content, layout, sourcing, etc. Technical help for Wikipedia is easy to find here and all over the web. If all else fails, just Google your question and you'll almost certainly find answers. If you search and still have trouble (once you search), email me. Several of the items below point to specific examples, but should be generalized throughout the article.
- Lead
- is "labyrinth" really an appropriate term to use?
- "Live music and entertainment consistently made appearances here. The underground music venues included the Old Arcade, the Frog, the Pier, Bears Den, and Nightgown." -- seems to indicate it's the venues that were particularly notable. you should probably say something along those lines. The lead summarizes the article, and in doing so is also supposed to explain the subject's notability.
- History section
- "Since the 1980's, people passing through Cameron Village were generally unaware of the history that lay beneath their feet." -- writing for an encyclopedia doesn't have to be completely dry, but use more straightforward prose.
- "1980s" in the first sentences seems unnecessary since you know the year it closed
- "many artists that are recognizable today and even more who are not" - describe them in terms other than whether or not they're recognizable
- as great as her article(s) were, this encyclopedia article is about the Village Subway and not Heather Leah's article or the renewed interest in the Village Subway. Emphasizing one source like this, especially with language like "The interest in the area was slight until a candid slice article, according to Heather Leah, reminded people of the vacated area," says to me "it wasn't notable when it existed and isn't now except for through this one article."
- Again, nothing against her, but someone looking for information about The Village Subway on Wikipedia doesn't care that "Leah expressed her interest via her online article," who contacted her, etc. Interest in various historical subjects is rekindled for a huge number of reasons. Use the articles and information generated by (and those generating) the rekindling about the subject, not about the rekindling itself.
- What's significant is the musicians reflecting on their experiences at the venues, not what caused them to reflect. Cite where appropriate, of course, but keep the subject central.
- If there's sufficient content for it, maybe including the upcoming Underground event, one idea is to create a section titled something like "2010s revival." Otherwise it should be a brief mention at the end of the history section
- "describes how often artists became famous after their performances at The Village Subway" - how? which?
- "Adams played keyboard and sang for many bands during the 1970's. Among them are the Glass Moon, and a local band with quite a bit of popularity at the time named The Fabulous Knobs." - this is tangential. summarize this when crediting Adams for his comments on the subject
- "The Village Subway was modeled after Underground Atlanta, a similar entertainment and shopping complex which is still in use today" -- seems like it should be higher in the section. do we have any information on how it was modeled after the one in Atlanta?
- need a citation for where the name Village Subway came from
- looks like the section generally needs restructuring to make something close to chronological order (some examples of this above, but also that the underground's closing at the end comes after the possible future use by Fresh Market)
- Artists section
- "Artists" is kind of an awkward section for an "entertainment district" to have. "Music scene" is an improvement but there's probably something better. Under "music scene" (or whatever you decide on), it looks like it may make sense to create sub-sections for the most notable venues.
- Unless there's a compelling reason, examples from the probably hundreds of acts that performed here should be those with existing Wikipedia pages
- Media use
- I know you're working on getting images/permission. How's that coming?
- General/misc
- Along with more content, you need more sections.
- Currently it's broken into "History" and "Artists." If I were to look at a table of contents those two wouldn't do a very good job of giving me an overview of the subject.
- The "Music scene" idea above would help. None of the sections should be very brief, though.
- There are more categories you could add the page to. Currently it's only in Category:Raleigh, North Carolina and Category:United States history stubs, and I don't think the latter applies anymore (this is more than a stub now). Maybe something about buildings and structures in Raleigh (or NC), music venues in Raleigh (or NC, or USA), entertainment venues in Raleigh, shopping malls in north carolina, defunct shopping districts...
- Create a redirect so that Village Subway points people to this page.
- (throughout): decades take just an s (1980s, not 1980's)
- keep looking and reaching out to people to find sources. I have faith! --Ryan McGrady (talk) 04:11, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
Notes from the night before second rough draft is due
[edit]Hey Liz- in case you didn't see my email, to cite already used sources, click "cite" and then choose "named references"
i know that we have been emailing a lot of questions but are we supposed to be talking on here or does it not matter?
also i had a question- for "see also", do we have to type actual sentences or is it just the "tagged" things?
