Merge?
[edit]Another article exists on Wikipedia, Transitioning (transgender), which is on the same topic as this article. Both articles are very short. Therefore, I think the articles should be merged in to one. This article also needs a lot of style editing, citations, and NPOVing, which I will continue to work on, but feel free to help. - I think mergeing this article into Transitioning (transgender) would be very appropriate unless I'm missing some nuance of language or culture. If I am then both articles need to clearly differentiate themselves and highlight the differences between the two. Benjiboi 21:46, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Misleading
[edit]This entire section is misleading. A person born with Harry Benjamin Syndrom (HBS a.k.a. Transexuality) is NOT Transgendered. A transsexual person and a transgender are two entirely different situation. HBS is a medical condition resulting from the dissonance between brain sex and the physical anatomical sex that were presence at birth. Gender is a social construct based on society expected gender roles and visible gender presentation. Transition of a person born with HBS is an intricate path of counselling, hormones, surgery, and a final, permanent transition into their correct sex. Transition for the transgendered involves an outward change in presentation and a transition to a new gender role, one that can be reversed with a change of clothing -- there is no change to their anatomical sex.
This article is another attempt by the transgenderists to merge themselves in the public eye with the medical condition of people born transsexual and the legal protections that parallel a physical change of sex. We are not the same. The big T umbrella is a politically correct term that replaces the realities of transsexuality with the "everyone is the same" theories of ivory tower university sociology.

- How original. Usually, we get people coming into the talk pages of transgender articles claiming that none of TS, CD, drag kings and queens, etc. are transgendered and that the term should be reserved for transexuals or perhaps intersexed people. To isolate transexuals from the rest of the transgender community while confirming that everybody else who is transgendered belongs in that group is certainly a different approach. I believe that, in some ways you are correct in regards of TSes who seek to transition and then live in stealth while denying their physical sex of birth. The existence of that subgroup within TSes is well documented and could viably be a sub-section within this article. You should realise, however, that the definition that you postulating is not consistent with general usage in the majority of the english speaking world. --AliceJMarkham 03:10, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
