M ?[edit]

Vvisiting Switzerland, I saw a Swiss plate with an M followed by I think 4 digits. I only saw such a plate once, and I am wondering what the M stands for. Can it be Military?, Medic?, Minister?, etc. 86.210.142.101 (talk) 10:49, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Military has black plates with a white M and numbers, the first 2 Numbers are represantative for the vehicles type. Prototypes had as first number a 0.

This articel is not up to date and informations are missing,, i addet this but becuse english is not my native language some deletet all.

the Plates with A (for adiminstration) and P (Postalservice & Train/SBB) dident exist anymore. they have the usual carplates from the Canton wehere the car is locatet. Also is missing that Rent car had in the past the letter V . Also should be said that car dealers have plates wit a U at the last position, these plates are used for testdrives after repair. Also importet cars have at the last Position a Z and a red Stcker with the import date. Diplomatic cars have the letters CD on ble background. Swiss peculiarity not mentioned[edit]

As the German version of this states, there is a very curious peculiarity of the Swiss system, that ought to be mentioned, Swiss license plates are issued not so much for the vehicle, but for the owner. Owner can keep the same license place for this and future cars, and may use it on more than one vehicle.
