Cyprus System
Under the Venetians the social and ecclesiastical organization remained more or less unchanged, in the participation of high-ranking Cypriots in the administration and in the choice of the various officials or beneficiaries of the island's income, in the maintenance of pivotal institutions such as the judicial ones, both secular and ecclesiastical, finally, in the recognition of feudal traditions as the acceptance of the homage ligio and the granting of counties and riders.
After the abdication of Caterina Cornaro and its affliction, Nicosia was installed in the Venetian regiment, composed of a lieutenant and two councilors elected by the major council with a two-year mandate. The regiment was in control of the administration, justice and of the finances of the kingdom. The captain of famagusta was instead responsible for the military organization of the island. The Cypriot nobles could obtain the office of judge for civil matters, the so-called "short-court". some opportunities for the administrative career were also reserved for non-noble Cypriots or at least those who had a reasonable economic comfort and who could boast an educational path sufficient for taking on the role of scribe in the offices of the cancecelleria, or administrator of rural territories.
Venetian legislation:
This legislation recognized the ethnic religious and cultural distinctions of the subjects of the kingdom: each witness swore on the sacred book of his religion and, to avoid inter-communal dissensions, the witnesses of the accusation had to belong to the same ethnic or religious group of the accused.
The Venetian authorities did not care much about the dogmatic divergences professed by the various religious communities of which the mar state corporations were composed.
Their main interest was the search for a formula of peaceful coexistence with their non-Catholic subjects, who represented the majority of the local population, and a policy of imposing Catholic dogma in the domains, as well as in the lagoon metropolis, was never initiated.
The republic tolerated the preservation of the cultural and religious identity of the various religious groups, as long as the political authority of the Venetian government was recognized and the interests of the ruling class protected. On the occasions when certain Venetian prelates adopted policies against the dogmatic difference of the members of other confessions, especially against the Orthodox of Eastern possessions, the political authorities always intervened in favor of the preservation of religious peace, mitigating the contrasts with the aim of preventing malcontents and the consequent insurrections of the subjects.
In fact, the recognition of the Cypriot population for religious tolerance shown by the Venetian authorities towards the non-Catholic community often transpires from the documents. The joint celebration of some great religious parties, like the day of the patron saint of the Mark and of the corpus domini, was the occasion to demonstrate the good climate that was breathed among the members of the various confessions.

Venetian Benefit: The Venetian period benefited the same Cypriots, from all walks of life, and the opportunity to benefit from it from Venetian politics put in place on the island in the sixteenth century. This is evidenced by the increase in population, the reinforcement of agricultural and artisanal production, the increase in the number of students in the Italian universities, the revitalization of the Orthodox church.
