General Walker

[edit]

If any non- WHS / MHS individuals are making changes, it is best AN ALUMNUS makes them. SOMEONE made two derogatory statements regarding my updating THE HISTORICAL FACTS OF MY SCHOOL and MY NEIGHBORHOOD. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.37.212.168 (talk) 17:56, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This school was indeed named for a Confederate general, but not the one listed - rather, William H.T. Walker, who died in the Battle of Atlanta a short distance from the location of the school, where he is memorialized by an upright cannon.

Reply to ValenzBoy - no documentation is needed regarding dedication of the high school, a simple consideration of these two generals will do! Joseph Walker had no connection at all with the Confederate armies active in Georgia, and none with Atlanta in particular, while William Henry Talbot Walker was a general with brigade command, who was killed in the opening shots of the Battle of Atlanta - indeed a decent argument says his death was the opening event of the battle. It was once quite common to name buildings and street in the vicinity of Atlanta after noted personalities of the Civil War with Georgia connections (e.g. John B. Gordon, William Hardee, Patrick Cleburne), while persons such as B Bragg, R E Lee, A S Johnston, even Jefferson Davis, received no such memorials.
